North Korea says 'don't mess with us' as US plans next move

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the United States was looking at ways to pressure North Korea over its nuclear program as North Korean state media warned the Americans of a "super-mighty preemptive strike" and said don't "mess with us".

Another reason for the missile failures could be North Korea's shift from liquid fuel to solid fuel, a more challenging technology to master. Otherwise it risks its alliance with South Korea and Japan.

"China's approach to the peninsula is under the same strains that it's been under before".

Another official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss an intelligence matter, said the missile was a Scud variant that the US calls a KN-17.

A slew of recent missile launches and North Korea's expected test of a sixth nuclear device have heightened concerns that the country is drawing closer to being capable of striking the USA with a nuclear weapon - something sure to bring the crisis to a head.

Pence, dressed in a green military jacket, said aboard the hulking carrier Ronald Reagan that President Trump's administration would continue to "work diligently" with allies like Japan and China to apply economic and diplomatic pressure on Pyongyang.

Mattis denounced North Korea's attempted missile launch as he began a Middle East tour, telling reporters travelling with him to Saudi Arabia, "the leader of North Korea again recklessly tried to provoke something by launching a missile", he said. "We stand at the tipping point".

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has said South Korea should immediately cancel the THAAD deployment, warning the system is undermining his country's own security.

It is not clear whether this was a deliberate deception, a change of plan or simple miscommunication, the BBC's Korea correspondent Stephen Evans says.

Earlier this year, China called on the USA and North Korea to give up something to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

Beijing is also dealing with divided public opinion domestically.

North and South Korea are technically still at war because their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.

The statement wanted the United Nations demands North Korea conducts no further tests.

The language on North Korea's nuclear program was more straightforward.

During Saturday's military parade it displayed what appeared to be new intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Mattis credited China with trying to help get the North Korea situation "under control" with the goal of denuclearizing the peninsula. Malaysia is seeking four North Korean suspects. But the vice-president expressed impatience with the unwillingness of North Korea to move toward ridding itself of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles.

"China firmly opposes any words or actions that would escalate rivalry and tension", Lu said. In February, it suspended imports of coal from North Korea, depriving the country of an important source of foreign currency.

The U.S. intends to install a missile defence shield in Europe, which it says is needed to provide protection from rockets fired by Iran.

"I think he's working very hard".

"This is clearly a distortion of history and an invasion of the Republic of Korea's sovereignty", conservative Liberty Korea Party candidate Hong Joon-pyo said through a spokesman.

China, instead, is pushing for more sanctions instead of military action.

China is North Korea's closest ally.

"As U.S. officials have pointed out, the U.S.is not seeking the collapse of the North Korean regime".
