U.S. President Donald Trump praised Chinese efforts to rein in "the menace of North Korea" on Thursday, after North Korean state media warned the United States of a "super-mighty preemptive strike". The ball is in their court.

The comments came a day after Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Washington is considering restoring the North to its terror sponsor list among other ways to pressure the communist state over its nuclear weapons program. US Vice President Mike Pence vowed on Wednesday that the United States would counter any North Korean attack with an "overwhelming and effective" response.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres separately said "everything" must be done to confront the threat from North Korea and ensure that its missile and nuclear programs do not pose an global threat.

Pyongyang periodically warns Washington of the dire consequences of taking on North Korea militarily.

"We fully support the efforts of all states in order to make sure that North Korea does not acquire the capacities that would become a threat not only to the region but in a wider area of the world", he told reporters.
