North Korea threatens 'super-mighty' strike on U.S.

It also expresses the council's "utmost concern" about North Korea's "highly destabilizing behavior and flagrant and provocative defiance" of council resolutions.

Reclusive North Korea regularly threatens to destroy Japan, South Korea and the United States and has shown no let-up in its belligerence after a failed missile test on Sunday, which followed a huge display of missiles at a parade in Pyongyang.

Russian Federation on Thursday denied that it had blocked UN Security Council condemnation of North Korea's latest missile test and accused the United States of breaking off talks on a statement in an "abrupt manner".

Council statements are adopted by consensus among all 15 members.

Speaking on the deck of a massive United States aircraft carrier on Wednesday, Pence cautioned North Korea against testing the resolve of the USA military.

U.S. President Donald Trump praised Chinese efforts to rein in "the menace of North Korea" on Thursday, after North Korean state media warned the United States of a "super-mighty preemptive strike". The ball is in their court.

The comments came a day after Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Washington is considering restoring the North to its terror sponsor list among other ways to pressure the communist state over its nuclear weapons program. A USA carrier strike group is (finally) on the way to the Korean Peninsula after Vice President Mike Pence reiterated that all options were on the table in regards to North Korea (but not peace negotiations), including shooting down future test missiles.

US Vice President Mike Pence vowed on Wednesday that the United States would counter any North Korean attack with an "overwhelming and effective" response.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres separately said "everything" must be done to confront the threat from North Korea and ensure that its missile and nuclear programs do not pose an global threat.

Pyongyang periodically warns Washington of the dire consequences of taking on North Korea militarily.

"We fully support the efforts of all states in order to make sure that North Korea does not acquire the capacities that would become a threat not only to the region but in a wider area of the world", he told reporters.
