Bill has been the undisputed king of cable news - and for good reason.

Crockett also said that despite Fox News' parting ways with its biggest star, the network will do just fine without him.

For most of Fox's existence, O'Reilly had been the linchpin of its success as the most visible and most watched host. Conservative personality Glenn Beck - who once lost a job at Fox because a similar campaign choked his program of paying advertisers - came to O'Reilly's defense on his radio show and called on viewers to pressure Fox, to no avail.

Shrouded in scandal, Ailes resigns from Fox News ending his 20-year run at the network.

Rupert Murdoch, the head of 21st Century Fox, becomes the channel's chairman and acting CEO.

"Fox News masquerades as a defender of traditional family values, but behind the scenes, it operates like a sex-fueled, Playboy Mansion-like cult, steeped in intimidation, indecency and misogyny", Tantaros claims in the suit.

But that wasn't really a lot compared to money Fox News was making from The O'Reilly Factor, which had been the top rated cable news programme for 15 years, bringing in around $100 million in ad revenues annually. Powers said she sought an apology from O'Reilly and didn't get one, and her complaints were waved off by various managers, including Ailes. The network issued a statement stating that the network and O'Reilly have agreed that he won't be returning.

O'Reilly adds on his own show that "if somebody is paying you a wage, you owe that person or company allegiance".

"It was a sad cocktail party story that women tell each other and shrug our shoulders and go, 'Ugh, another one, ' " Walsh told NPR earlier this month. With him moving up an hour, 9 p.m. likely represents Fox's biggest challenge.

The New York Times started the countdown with a report in April that Fox News and O'Reilly, who is 67 and had been with the cable news channel since 1996, had reached settlements with five women who had alleged sexual harassment or inappropriate behaviour going back to 2004.

When Cooper asked if Waters still felt that way, she replied, "The day will come when rich men won't be able to buy their way out of this criminal activity, and they will go to jail, and they should go to jail".

O'Reilly's "Killing" historical series, including "Killing Lincoln" and "Killing Reagan", have consistently sold 1 million or more copies in hardcover, a rare achievement in publishing, and his platform on Fox enabled him to promote his work.

O'Reilly - who has denied the claims - has been off the air since last week, when he announced he would be taking a vacation.

"Bill O'Reilly has been subjected to a brutal campaign of character assassination that is unprecedented in post-McCarthyist America", Marc Kasowitz said in a statement.
