USA 'ready to help bring' Syria conflict to end: Haley

The tense talks U.S. State Secretary Rex Tillerson held in Moscow on Wednesday didn't seem to narrow the gap.

"There were no signs that would support the statement, the allegation that chemical agents were used there at all", Lavrov said.

"One side inevitably would have to make big sacrifices inconsistent with some of its policy interests, but Trump and Vladimir Putin are two.assertive personalities who instinctively preserve their powerful images".

But Lavrov, on Thursday, offered a speck of optimism for the future of the relationship between the two Cold War foes.

"We discussed our view that Russian Federation as their closest ally in the conflict perhaps has the best means of helping Assad recognize this reality", he said.

Trump had frequently called during the 2016 U.S. presidential election campaign for warmer ties with Putin, despite criticism from lawmakers in his own Republican Party.

In a sign the Kremlin is not ready to drop Assad, Syria's foreign minister will fly to Moscow to meet Lavrov on Thursday before a three-way meeting with Iran on Friday.

An official said the White House was "very concerned" about interference in the October elections, blaming them for an alleged coup attempt.

"I just don't get a good feeling that whatever we're doing has been thoroughly thought out and there's some kind of a plan", said New York Rep. Eliot Engel, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

But such hopes appeared optimistic as the diplomats outlined their sharply diverging views on Syria.

The fate of a war measure may ultimately boil down to whether Trump's strike against Assad last week was the beginning of a larger campaign against the Syrian leader.

He gave the order to fire missiles at Syria to punish Moscow's ally for its suspected use of poison gas. Russian Federation has never publicly acknowledged any such attacks by Assad's forces and has tried for the past 18 months to help him expand his authority in Syria.

The civil war is separate from the US -led effort against the Islamic State group in the north of the country.

While the most immediate U.S.

Tillerson was greeted frostily in the Russian capital as Lavrov began their meeting Wednesday by demanding to know America's "real intentions".

USA officials said that the missile strike was made against the facility from which the chemical attacks were carried out, as quoted by an earlier article by CNN.

Trump and others have indeed threatened similar action.

He reiterated the U.S. position that Assad must eventually relinquish power in Syria.

Speaking following the meetings, Mr Lavrov ruled out withdrawing his support for Syrian leader Assad, saying that "ousting a particular personality is not on our agenda".

"I would like to stress that the U.S. missile attack on the Shayrat air base was actually a provocation", the Russian top diplomat said.
