In a surprising and stunning move, the powerful Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Jason Chaffetz, has just announced he will not run for re-election.

An official spokesperson for the Democratic National Committee pushed a conspiracy theory that Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R., Utah) decided not to run for reelection in 2018 because he is being blackmailed by Russian Federation.

Before running for Congress, Chaffetz worked for politician and diplomat Jon Huntsman Jr.in 2004 as campaign manager in Huntsman's successful race for Utah governor, then as chief of staff after Huntsman took office. "Many of you have heard me advocate, 'Get in, serve, and get out, '" his statement read.

Provo Mayor John Curtis said Wednesday that he would consult with his family and advisors and make a decision at a later date. I am healthy. I am confident I would continue to be re-elected by large margins, ' Chaffetz wrote. Chaffetz's panel is investigating payments made to Michael Flynn, Trump's former national security adviser, for speaking engagements in Russian Federation and the security protocols at President Trump's Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach.

For the time being, Chaffetz says, he will "return to the private sector".

Without an incumbent candidate, many see this as an opportunity for a new perspective and new leadership in the 3rd Congressional District. But he was facing a surprising challenge from a Democratic newcomer who raised more than a half-million dollars by tapping into anger over Chaffetz's recent comment suggesting people should spend their money on health insurance instead of iPhones.

If Chaffetz is over it all, it's tough to blame him.

His likely Democratic challenger next fall is political newcomer and family physician Dr. Kathryn Allen, who had an uphill battle in the red district, has already raised over $560,000 for her campaign, an nearly unprecedented sum for a non-incumbent congressional campaign 18 months away from election day. And Chaffetz has always, reportedly, had an eye on higher office, likely replacing Orrin Hatch in the Senate.

Jason Chaffetz married his wife Julie in 1991. "I wish him all the best in his future endeavors".
