British MPs vote in favour of early election call

Every time there is a comparison drawn between British Prime Minister Theresa May and a former woman premier "Iron lady" Margaret Thatcher it ends up in the argument that the former is an unelected incumbent while Thatcher had been through the rough and tumble of elections and competitive politics.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said: "We welcome the general election but this is a Prime Minister who promised there wouldn't be one, a Prime Minister who can not be trusted".

Speaking at First Minister's Questions on Thursday, Sturgeon said: "The idea in this election that Labour is going to replace the Conservatives is frankly pie in the sky".

She said on Tuesday she had "reluctantly" come to the decision to call for an early election because of political division in Westminster, suggesting that opposition parties were trying to thwart her plans for leaving the EU.

She claimed a large Conservative majority would strengthen the Government's hand in getting a good Brexit deal and provide "strong and stable leadership in the national interest".

Before May's surprise decision to call a vote, the next election had been scheduled for May 2020, little over a year after the date on which the expected to leave the EU.

"She expects a coronation and not a contest", Mr Farron said, urging voters to back his strongly pro-EU party to stop a Conservative landslide.

Jeremy Corbyn will promise that a Labour government will "put the interests of the majority first" and oppose the "cosy cartel" running the United Kingdom as the left-wing leader delivers his first major speech of the general election campaign on Thursday (20 April).

European Union officials say Britain's surprise election will not interrupt the bloc's preparations for Brexit talks " though they will slightly delay the start of negotiations.

Less a debate, more a dress rehearsal for the campaign
The decision means Britain will once again head to the polls on 8 June for the second general election in two years. Under current legislation, parliaments have to sit for five years before new elections take place.

Tusk will chair a summit of the other 27 European Union national leaders in Brussels on April 29, where he expects them to agree negotiating guidelines he has proposed.

May ruled out participating in televised debates with other leaders.

Following a meeting of the Labour National Executive, attended by Scottish party leader Kezia Dugdale, Mr Corbyn said the Nationalists had wrecked their progressive credentials by refusing to implement a 50p tax rate.

But her decision also opens the door to more uncertainty in the region, as it now puts Europe's three most powerful nations - Britain, Germany, and France - into full-throttle election mode.

He said the British government will have "no say" on the issue because it is not part of the Brexit negotiations, but "will have to ease the burden of relocating" staff to European Union cities.

The Liberal Democrats and Labour both supported the motion.

I think the Prime Minister has pulled a blinder.

The Liberal Democrats have said they want to grind the business of government to a standstill.
