Facebook For 'Everyone' And Not Just High End, Says Mark Zuckerberg

Augmented reality tools unveiled by Facebook were impressive, but unlikely to reach the hands of users soon, according to Jackdaw Research analyst Jan Dawson.

Facebook executives stressed that the technology is still in its early stages, and that the "journey to the future of augmented reality is just 1 percent finished", as Deb Liu, vice president of platform and marketplaces, put it. Spaces now makes extensive use of the Rift's Touch Controller, but actually requires very little movement - users are mostly standing around at a virtual table, browsing and sharing media while they chat with each other.

TechCrunch reports: "Facebook announced updates to its Workplace by Facebook team communications tool, including a slew of new partnerships and new bot integrations, which all show a product that's maturing to meet the needs of larger enterprise customers".

New integrations with Facebook's Workplace offering are also aimed at making it easier for users to collaborate using third-party applications such as Microsoft Office, Box, or Salesforce. Importantly, Facebook is making the barrier to taking part as low as possible. It's the first time the company has connected the Rift to its social network in a meaningful way, though it's a development Zuckerberg hinted at when the company bought Oculus back in 2014 for $2 billion.

Users can then invite any of their Facebook friends to join them in Spaces; Facebook Spaces is also integrated with Facebook Messenger, so users can do video calls from within VR to talk to other Messenger users, even if those users don't have a VR headset.

Changes were made and features added to Facebook Messenger that aim to improve communication between consumers and businesses. He also expressed a desire to turn Messenger into the "yellow pages of messaging".

"People are already using the cameras on their phones to write text on images, add digital objects and modify existing things with face filters and style transfers", they say. "We'd all be better off if we looked up a little more often".

The promise of augmented and virtual reality was a big focus of Facebook's annual conference for developers on Tuesday.

During a clip highlighting Facebook Spaces, the headset appeared to be affixed to someone's head, suggesting the device is coming along nicely. We can't imagine it will be much longer, though an unveiling at Oculus Connect 4 (presumably in October 2017) and holiday release seem the most plausible.
