French overseas territories kicking off presidential voting

A prominent Jewish supporter of the far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen in France blamed the current government for the death of a police officer in a suspected terrorist attack in Paris. One officer was killed, and police shot and killed the gunman after he had seriously wounded two others.

"She's the strongest on borders and she's the strongest on what's been going on in France", Trump said.

Ms Le Pen used the aftermath of the Champs-Elysees attack - which Islamic State has claimed it carried out - to call for the government to immediately expel foreigners being monitored by intelligence services and reinstate France's borders.

A terrorist attack in Paris yesterday - the sixth in the last 3 years - may have an impact on the first round of voting for president on Sunday, analysts say.

With two of the leading four top candidates hostile to the European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, the election could further shake up the West's liberal post-war order, already rattled by Britain's vote to leave the European Union and Donald Trump's election to the White House.

According to the latest opinion polls, centrist Emmanuel Macrn, the far-right's Marine Le Pen, the right's Francois Fillon and far-left Jean-Luc Melenchon are the closest to making it to the second round.

France will hold its first round of elections on Sunday, followed by a runoff between the top two vote-getters on May 7. "The choice on Sunday is simple: It is a choice between a France that is rising again and a France that is sinking", she said.

Macron and Le Pen are leading the polls and only two candidates will make it to the final round of elections on May 7.

"We must attack the ideology of this terrorism, which has been proliferating for years", she said on Twitter.

Earlier this week, a number of community figures told The Algemeiner that French Jews were apprehensive and had no favorite candidate among the 11 running in the election's first round.

United States presidents typically avoid weighing in on specific candidates running in overseas election.

Cazeneuve, a Socialist, said Le Pen's National Front (FN) "after each attack, seeks to exploit it and use it for purely political means". Here finance experts reveal how to get the most for your travel money, take a look through the gallery.

Speaking with the AP, Trump clarified that he thought the attack would "probably help" Le Pen, specifically.

Mrs Le Pen, a former immigration lawyer, had her office targeted by arsonists and previously survived a bomb attack.

Earlier, the U.S. president tweeted that the attack, claimed by the Islamic State, "will have a big effect" on the vote. The attack on the Champs-Elysees resembled two other recent attacks on soldiers providing security at high profile locations in Paris: one at the Louvre museum in February and another at Orly airport last month. "There's no such thing as zero risk".
