Equipment failure at a utility station and a subsequent fire pulled the plug on San Francisco on Friday, cutting power to downtown businesses and homes for hours.

The series of outages hit the city at 9am on Friday, said Tamar Sarkissian, a spokeswoman for Pacific Gas & Electric. The outage is being associated with a fire at an electrical substation in the Tenderloin. No injuries have been reported.

PG&E said power should be fully restored later Friday evening.

PG&E said its was dispatching crews to address the outage.

Authorities said the outage started around 9:15 a.m. Residents were asked to call 911 only in the event of an emergency.

Many of Muni's electric trolley buses were also affected by the power outage, because the buses run on overhead wires. Nobody's stopping at the lights. Rather than cross one of the cities bridges to an area with power, he told those affected to "see the city and enjoy the restaurants, enjoy the parks and whatnot".
