Turnbull said at a joint news conference with Pence in Sydney on Saturday that China has the opportunity and "responsibility" to use its economic leverage to force China into compliance.

Mr Cosgrove said the alliance started an "unbreakable relationship", telling Mr Pence: "We've been with you every step of the way".

Tensions between Washington and Pyongyang have soared recently following a series of missile launches amid fears that the North may be readying a sixth nuclear test.

Under the deal, asylum seekers held in offshore processing camps on South Pacific islands in Papua New Guinea and Nauru will be resettled in the U.S., with Australia taking in refugees from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras in return.

In January, US president Mr Trump and Mr Turnbull clashed over the agreement that strained ties between the countries. After taking office, Trump was infuriated upon learning that the previous Obama administration had agreed to a refugee resettlement deal with Australia. For Australia, closing the detention centers has become a major political and legal issue.

The US commitment to take the refugees was "a reflection of the enormous importance of the historical alliance between the United States and Australia... whatever reservations the president may have about the details", he said.

"My presence here today - at the President's direction - it is about a reaffirmation of the strong ties in both our security and our prosperity", Pence said during his meeting with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and also conveyed US President Donald Trump's greetings.

Pence made the remarks here at a joint press conference with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull that the agreement would be honoured, subject to vetting, even if the United States did not agree with it, Efe news reported. Turnbull and Pence both spoke of the two countries' long history of milita.

In between making nice with Mr Turnbull and talking tough on North Korea, Mr Pence found time to mingle on the perfectly manicured laws of Admiralty House for lunch with Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove and a select group of leaders from Australia's military, business and arts sectors.

Mr Turnbull opened the bilateral talks at Admiralty House by speaking of how the relationship between Australia and the USA stretched back to the battlefields of World War One.

The vice president is the first senior Trump administration official to visit Australia.

Pence will meet with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on Saturday as part of his 10-day, four country tr.

Pence is also scheduled to meet with Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and the leader of the opposition party, Bill Shorten.

While in Australia, Mr Pence and his family will meet some local wildlife, including the koala, at Sydney's zoo, take a harbour cruise and tour the world-famous Sydney Opera House.
