Sanders promoting new blood in Democrats but impact unclear

The former Democratic presidential nominee even told The Washington Post that Ossoff "was not a progressive" and that he was more interested in candidates who were economically populist. Sanders asked, exasperated. "And I think the answer to that is the failure of the Democratic Party - to have a progressive agenda, to bring people into the party, to mobilize people". Republicans hold both U.S. Senate seats and all but one of the state's U.S. House seats. And as he reports, Democrats are having a tough time doing that healing.

"It continues to drive me a bit nuts that he continues to register as an independent but the bottom line is that he is a good Democrat", said Democratic strategist Jim Manley. "They are Republican lite".

Bernie Sanders attracted millions of college-aged and young adults to his presidential campaign a year ago, and is now using that popularity to headline the Democratic rallies.

He's also backed Kimberly Ellis, a 43-year-old California activist who has led a Democratic women's advocacy group and is campaigning for California Democratic Party chairwoman. It's part of a Democratic National Committee-organized unity tour with DNC Chair Tom Perez.

They're promoting an agenda that includes raising the minimum wage, providing pay equity for women, rebuilding roads and bridges, passing immigration reform and making public colleges tuition-free.

PEREZ: (Over loudspeaker) We believe that health care is a right for all and not a privilege for a few.

SHAPIRO: Last night, Bernie Sanders told an audience in Miami that Donald Trump did not win the election.

Earlier Thursday, however, abortion-rights advocates argued that Sanders and the Democratic Party shouldn't support those who favor restricting abortion. The Vermont senator will be joined by Perez at the event Tuesday, April 18, 2017.

Considering how women's rights-and women's votes-have the potential to be an enormous element in the midterm elections in 2018, it's safe to say Sanders and Perez are under pressure to get their messaging on track. "He is the only politician that people are listening to that actually cares about the middle-class". But Bernie Sanders hasn't exactly been showering the Democratic Party with love this week. "It's an investment. If people are getting health care, it's an investment".

"At a time of massive income and wealth inequality and a shrinking middle class, we need a government which represents all Americans, not just Wall Street, multi-national corporations, and the top 1 percent", Sanders and Perez said in a joint statement on Monday.

"Kentuckians have roundly rejected the ultra-liberal, anti-jobs platform of coastal elites like Sanders and Perez", Kentucky Republican Party spokesman Tres Watson said. Sanders will headline a Louisville event aimed at helping re-energize Kentucky's downtrodden D.

"We need newer faces across the board: Veterans, police officers, teachers, coaches, firefighters that can improve our party's brand at least visually", said Ryan, who unsuccessfully challenged Nancy Pelosi for Democratic House minority leader late past year.
