UK Prime Minister Announces Snap General Election

Praising MPs for backing her during a stump speech in the north-west of England, the PM said: "It's great to be here in Bolton, fresh from the House of Commons, fresh from winning a vote in the House of Commons, which has approved my decision to hold a general election on June 8".

"This should cross party lines", he said in a statement hours after Prime Minister Theresa May announced plans for a June 8 vote.

Blair claimed that UK Prime Minister Theresa May had ruled out staying in the EU single market and she chose to call the snap election in order to gain support for the possible "hard Brexit", implying no mutually beneficial EU-UK agreement on such terms as the single market and migration policy. As a supporter of Labour for the past 60 years and also a Brexit voter, I fully support her decision and reason for taking this course of action.

"It was with reluctance that I decided the country needs this election, but it is with strong conviction that I say it is necessary to secure the strong and stable leadership the country needs to see us through Brexit and beyond", May said.

Labour was reportedly considering calling for a second referendum to win over Remain voters who may be tempted to switch to the Liberal Democrats, who have promised a national poll on the final UK-EU deal. "The election gives the British people the chance to change direction".

Labour's Corbyn made clear he'll focus on May's dramatic decision to reverse her position on an early election as a sign she won't keep her promises.

Three weekend opinion polls put the Conservatives about 20 points ahead of Labour, and if translated into votes, this could give May an "election landslide" with a majority of more than 100, according to an analysis by The Times.

Parliament will be dissolved on May 2, sparking nearly six weeks of campaigning.

European Union officials say Britain's surprise election will not interrupt the bloc's preparations for Brexit talks - though they will slightly delay the start of negotiations.

"Her current position is: Brexit will happen, there's no turning back and no deal is better than a bad deal".

Unfortunately many of her Westminster colleagues, Tory, Labour, Liberal Democrat and SNP alike do not share her view on this matter.

May will be going into the election holding 330 of the 650 seats in the House of Commons, with a working majority of 17.

But she added: "Also, of course, as UK Prime Minister, I have an interest and a care for UK citizens living in European Union member states".

Brok said he expects May to win a parliamentary majority, but it's unclear how big.

But one of last year's strongest pro-European voices, former Conservative finance minister George Osborne, will not seek re-election.
