United Kingdom may reverse Brexit post polls: EU Parliament President

In an unexpected U-turn, UK Prime Minister Theresa May has proposed and won approval to hold a snap general election that could have significant implications for the country's Brexit negotiating position, but is unlikely to affect trade. This election is a chance for them to change direction of the country.

Mrs May used her speech to praise MPs after 522 voted in the Commons for the early election, with just 13 against. They also say that a big victory for May will dilute the influence of those lawmakers pushing for a "hard Brexit" as well as strengthening May's overall negotiating stance.

He said: "The message is a positive message".

Parliament will vote Wednesday on holding a June 8 election.

"That would be in nobody's interest", May said.

A spokesman for Mrs May said the British government was aiming to dissolve parliament on May 3rd - 25 working days before election day.

Both Sturgeon's Scottish Nationalists and the Liberal Democrats want Britain to remain in the EU's single market - something May has ruled out, along with a referendum on any deal she wins.

She blamed the Lib Dems, for wanting to "grind" the business of government to a standstill, the SNP for threatening to vote against negotiations and Labour's threat to vote against the final Brexit agreement.

Despite Corbyn's bravado, his party is demoralized and divided under his left-wing leadership and is expected to fare badly.

Elections are now set for 2020, just a year after the scheduled completion of Brexit talks.

May's Conservatives now hold 330 of the 650 seats in the House of Commons.

Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron said that, for May, calling the election is "the political equivalent of taking candy from a baby". May admitted that she needs a stronger position in the House of Commons to secure her plans for Britain's future outside the European Union.

At that stage, she has the option of calling a second European Union membership referendum - conveniently at a time when the current Brexit negotiations are still at an embryonic stage.

Based on this initial reaction, investors appears confident that May will end up with a bigger majority in Parliament that will give her a stronger position in the Brexit negotiations with the other 27 European Union states.

"Hard-line eurosceptic backbenchers will struggle to oppose her if she wants to soften Brexit in some areas; equally, a weak opposition will struggle to prevent a hardening in others if that's what she chooses", says Irwin.

In his meeting with May, Tajani emphasized that an early agreement on the rights of EU citizens living in the United Kingdom was the European Parliament's priority.

May said that opponents were intent on "frustrating the Brexit process", even after Parliament authorized talks with the EU.

Residency and social security were also highlighted by the Commission as rights it will seek to protect in the two-year negotiations with London, as the two sides try to undo the mass of legislation agreed on since Britain joined the then-European Community in 1973.

Meanwhile Theresa May felt confident enough to withdraw from a leaders' debate, saying she'd rather speak to people on the doorstep.
