The New England Patriots tight end was found unresponsive inside his prison cell on Wednesday, April 19, according to the Massachusetts Department of Corrections.

Thursday afternoon Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early determined Hernandez's prison death was a suicide and said the state's chief medical examiner had withheld some tissue samples from the ex-NFL star's brain as part of the effort to confirm he took his own life.

Investigators officially ruled Aaron Hernandez's death a suicide and released new details about the circumstances of his hanging on Thursday.

Hernandez had been locked in his cell at 8 p.m., seven hours before his body was found, and three hand-written notes were found near a Bible in his cell, Early added.

Now that the autopsy has been completed, Hernandez's brain will be given to Boston University's Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Center in accordance with his family's wishes.

The 27-year-old man was serving a life sentence for killing the semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd in June of 2013 and was convicted of first-degree murder in 2015.

"We need to specifically do everything possible to find out what happened", Baez said.

The degenerative disease is believed to be caused by repeated head trauma, and has been found in famed National Football League players including Junior Seau and Dave Duerson.

The official report listed Hernandez's manner of death suicide and the cause asphyxia by hanging.

Aaron Hernandez's brain is being turned over to his family after his lawyer accused authorities in MA of "illegally" keeping it from them, NBC News reports. Hernandez's family, he said, still doesn't know what was in the notes he left behind and was learning disturbing details about Hernandez's death from news reports and on Twitter.

MA officials announced Thursday Hernandez's brain will be released to Boston University's CTE Center for further examination.

"The family of Aaron Hernandez has chose to donate Aaron's brain to the study so we can possibly help other young men who play football. further the cause, and possibly shed light and provide more evidence on this case", Baez said.

According to the Daily Mail, "Hernandez was planning his suicide for weeks". It was just last Friday that Hernandez was found not guilty of the murder during a drive-by shooting back in 2012 that took two lives. The judge did, however, sentence Aaron to four to five years on a weapons-related charge.
