British Prime Minister Theresa May said on Friday that she was not taking anything for granted as she geared up for a snap election in June, in which polls suggest her Conservative party was heading for a landslide victory.

Most political observers believe Corbyn is fighting a losing battle, and will be forced to resign his leadership post after Labour gets clubbed.

The Scottish National Party now holds 54 of Scotland's 59 seats in the British Parliament, making it the third-largest party there.

It would also allow Ms May - a campaigner against Brexit less than 12 months ago - to set her own, more moderate, Brexit agenda rather than be dictated to by her hardline Brexiteer backbenchers, as has been the case in recent months.

His remarks prompted shadow chancellor John McDonnell to claim that the Conservatives were planning a "tax bombshell" if they were returned to power.

"Some say it is to defeat the Tory Right so that she can go for a "softer Brexit".

In 2010, they helped to stop David Cameron's Conservatives from winning a majority and five years later the party gained seats in England, a result masked by its near-wipeout in Scotland.

The Liberal Democrats are targeting Remain-voting Labour seats in the North of England where voters feel "betrayed by Jeremy Corbyn's support for a divisive hard Brexit", Mr Farron said.

Separate analysis by Opinium, which has been tracking the same 2,000 voters throughout this parliament, found that only 53% of those who had said they meant to vote Ukip in February are still planning to do so in the 8 May election, with 30% of them saying they will transfer allegiance to the Tories.

Conservatives at 45% versus Labour at 26%. Corbyn will also say that the number of "titan" primary schools - those with more than 800 pupils - has increased nearly seven-fold since 2010. Back then, the politician demanded "more transparency" when it came to the 60-year-old's actual plans for Britain leaving the European Union, and admitted he did not see anything wrong with the possibility of a second referendum.

"We had a fight on our hands last time and we won, and we've got a fight on our hands this time - and we're going to win as well", he told AFP.

May called the vote this week, accusing opposition parties of seeking to disrupt Brexit and saying that only she provides the "strong and stable leadership" needed as Britain heads into negotiations with the EU. That position was echoed by Hammond, speaking in Washington, who said the government had solved the problem of pensioner poverty. He refers to Conservative members as "morally bankrupt" and belonging to a "gilded elite" group of society, a group who "extracts wealth" from the pockets of the regular working class. "But we can determine what mandate she can claim". As June 8 nears, it will become ever more likely that the conventional wisdom that things can't be changed - that our country must be run in the interests of the powerful and super-rich - will be overturned.
