New UK Government Could Reverse Brexit, European Parliament President Says

May, who took office in July after an internal Conservative Party leadership race, wants the election to increase her majority in Parliament and consolidate her power as she faces both pro-EU opposition politicians and hard-core Brexit-backers inside her own party.

The Liberal Democrats are targeting Remain-voting Labour seats in the North of England where voters feel "betrayed by Jeremy Corbyn's support for a divisive hard Brexit", Mr Farron said.

The decision means that the election campaign can now begin in earnest.

MPs have passed a motion in favour of a General Election on June 8-after prime minister Theresa May took everyone by surprise on Tuesday by asking the nation to go to the polls again a little over two years since the Tories, under then PM David Cameron, won a slim majority to form a government.

A spokesman for Mrs May said the British government was aiming to dissolve parliament on May 3rd - 25 working days before election day.

The next general election wasn't due until 2020, one year after Brexit talks are scheduled to conclude.

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May arrives in Downing Street, in central London April 19, 2017.

"For us, the agreement is [to have the same rights] as today [and] yesterday, tomorrow", he said.

So far, May has only revealed elements of her domestic agenda in her "plan for Britain" earlier this year, including more grammar schools, as well as making clear she wants to pursue an active industrial strategy and cap energy bills. May stated these polls is in the country's "national interest" and will strengthen her hand in the complex Brexit negotiations.

"If the United Kingdom wanted to stay, everybody would be in favor", Antonio Tajani said after a meeting with Theresa May at Downing Street to discuss Britain's withdrawal from the EU.

Elections are now set for 2020, just a year after the scheduled completion of Brexit talks.

Parliament will vote Wednesday on holding a June 8 election.

The parliamentary election comes less than a year after Britain voted to leave the European Union, and will likely be dominated by the political and economic upheaval spawned by Brexit.

"We need to keep the 2015 pledges on raising the personal allowance to £12,500 by 2020, free childcare hours and appeal to the just managing families whom May has spoken about", the MP said.

"There is no obstacle to the government negotiating, but instead of getting on with the job she is painting herself as the prisoner of Lib Dem threats to grind government to a standstill", Corbyn said, adding that the Liberal Democrats have "only nine" seats in parliament.

"As with the referendum, which many European leaders saw as a Tory cat fight that got out of control, I have little doubt many on the continent see this election as again motivated by the internal machinations of the Tory party".
