Pakistan condemns terrorist attack on Afghan military base

Taliban kills eight soldiers at army headquarters in northern Afghanistan

Taliban claims around 500 army personnel were killed or wounded during the attack.

The attack happened at about 1.30 p m on Friday at a mosque located onsite of Afghan National Army's 209 Shaheen Corps Headquarters in Balkh province.

Taliban militants in three military vehicles with forged documents launched the attack by shooting a rocket at the entrance of the army base.

At the time of attack, security forces were observing Friday prayers. He says security guards stopped them at a third gate and that's when the attackers opened fire.

The defense officials are saying that one of the suicide bombers was arrested while the other one managed to detonate his explosives, opening the way for the other insurgents to start firing on the soldiers.

Ghani linked the attack to the stepped-up attacks on the militant group nationwide.

Photos circulating online showed the inside of the mosque pock-marked with bullet holes and strewn with shattered glass.

"It was a chaotic scene and I didn't know what to do", said one army officer wounded in the attack.

Other unarmed soldiers were dropping dead and wounded around him.

The latest attack starkly highlighted the struggle of the Afghan government and its global backers in defeating a potent Taliban insurgency that has gripped Afghanistan for more than a decade.

"At first there was a call on the radio not to shoot because they thought it could have been a misunderstanding", said the guard Saboor, who reported that some base officials initially thought it might have been a disagreement between soldiers.

Gunmen wearing army uniforms stormed a military compound in the Balkh province, killing at least eight soldiers and wounding 11 others, an Afghan government official said Friday.

Gen. Mohammad Radmanish, deputy spokesman for the Defense Ministry, said the militants entered the base in Balkh province using two military vehicles and attacked army personnel inside the compound's mosque.

Afghan officials are investigating that claim, but Zabihullah said he had no doubt that the gunmen had inside help.
