Street protests unacceptable, Turkish PM warns opposition

The referendum itself (assuming a miraculously honest recount doesn't reverse the result) promises to replace what's left of Turkish democracy with one-man rule, since it gives the president near-absolute power.

Opposition parties, the Turkish bar association and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe monitoring group have said the referendum fell short of worldwide standards.

"We call on the authorities to launch a transparent investigation into these alleged irregularities", Commission spokesperson Margaritis Schinas said when asked about the conclusions of the observer mission from the Council of Europe human rights body. Ten members of the Supreme Election Board (YSK) decided against annulling the vote, while only one voted in favour, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

Turkey's prime minister says opposition parties have the right to file objections to the outcome of a recent referendum on expanding presidential powers, but warned that calling for street protests was unacceptable. If not stamped, they are to be considered invalid.

"The YSK announcement, which is clearly against the law, has led to irregularities, and the prevention of records that could uncover irregularities from being kept", the bar said, expressing hopes that the YSK would appropriately evaluate the complaints.

Erdogan lashed back at the worldwide monitors' initial findings, telling them to "know their place", Reuters reported. Everyone and all sections - and the main opposition party in particular- must show respect.

Erdogan himself has told critics to "talk to the hand", adding that Turkey will not "see, hear, nor acknowledge" political reports on the matter.

Trump and Erdogan spoke via phone on Monday in a pre-arranged call, in which the US President offered congratulatory words, as well as discussing topics such as the ongoing conflict in Syria.

The statement was released hours after White House spokesman Sean Spicer declined to comment on the result of the constitutional reform referendum in Turkey until a review of the vote by an worldwide electoral monitoring mission is finished.
