In another case of violence against minorities, three Muslim men were attacked by Gau Rakshaks near the Kalkaji metro station in Delhi last night.

The three injured men were taken to the AIIMS Trauma Center. A case has been registered against the three men on a complaint by the PFA members while the driver of the truck, that was going Ghazipur Mandi, made a complaint against the activists, police said. The report suggests that the PCR had received a call from Gaurav Gupta, an animal activist and an office-bearer of People for Animals (PFA).

"It was not a case of illegal transporting of cattle but carrying them in a cruel and inhuman manner". However, the police are yet to arrest any of the people who allegedly assaulted them.

However, eyewitnesses said that a group of five to six PFA activists allegedly beat up Rizwan, Kamil and Ashu after stopping their vehicle near Kalkaji temple, while three others, said to be butchers, reportedly escaped from the spot. The men had legal transit papers for transporting the animals.

The PFA website says it is "India's largest animal welfare organisation with a nationwide network of 26 hospitals, 165 units and 2.5 lakh members". The organisation is chaired by Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi, who has denied the allegation, NDTV reported.

The PFA however has denied that its men were involved in the incident. "They suffered simple injuries on face and lips", the DCP said, adding the PFA members left without filing a complaint. "Whoever acted did so in his individual capacity", Gandhi's office said.

A senior journalist too happened to be passing by the Outer Ring Road stretch near Kalkaji when he came across the injured persons, some police officials present at the spot and some unidentified men who claimed to have trashed the three men. One against the three men for cruelty towards animals and the other, for the assault against them.

Gupta said their team had rescued several animals during another raid in south Delhi early on Sunday.

In the recent past, such vigilante groups have grown in presence and numbers across the country, emboldened by the indifference of the state and the Union government.

Rising cow vigilantism, however, is causing problem as buffalo meat - which goes by different names globally - is also referred to as beef, a reason enough for the so-called cow protectors to assault people or even force shut down of eateries.
