A State of Mind: Mental Health and the London Marathon

Speaking candidly about the trauma they endured as children when their mother Diana, Princess of Wales, was killed in a auto crash in Paris, the princes urged people to be more open with their emotions.

Prince William, Princess Kate, and Prince Harry put their hands together to push the red button that started the London Marathon.

The young royals have been increasingly visible the past couple of weeks, stepping up their efforts to spark conversations about mental health.

"Harry and I over the years, have not talked enough about our mother".

When William said he and his brother Harry had not talked enough about their mother, Harry agreed, saying: "Never enough", and when Kate asked if their Heads Together campaign had made Harry realise this, he replied: "Yeah, I think so". As Heads Together is the leading charity for this year's London Marathon, the Royals went to Radio 1 to surprise presenter and marathon-runner Adele Roberts. The conversation covers a range of topics including the emotional changes new parents go through, bereavement, the stresses of modern childhood, and dealing with trauma in the workplace.

Britain's Prince William (R) and his wife Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge speaking to Prince Harry before a lunch for overseas royalty hosted by Queen Elizabeth to mark her Diamond Jubilee at Windsor Castle in southern England May 18, 2012.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry will be dotted along the course to lend support to the 40,000 competitors pounding the streets of the capital.

This year's London Marathon participants had an extra special cheering section waiting for them along the 26-mile route.

"(I thought) it's only going to make you sad, it's not going to bring her back.

William's first words to Pippa Creasy and her two grown-up children Will and Henrieta were "Good luck, how's the training been going?", then he added "How's the adrenaline going?"

Their year-long campaign culminates at the 2017 Virgin Money London Marathon in which a team of more than 700 runners are participating to raise mental health awareness. You just learn from previous generations and hope that you can translate it into what, you know, what you want to do.

It's "time that everyone speaks up and really feels very normal about mental health", William tells Gaga in the video.
