EPA chief delays methane rule at behest of oil and gas firms

The agency announced Wednesday it was reconsidering an Obama administration rule curbing methane emissions from new oil and gas wells - a measure created to reduce the US impact on climate change.

EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt was due to join IN leaders including Gov. Eric Holcomb and U.S. Sens. That idea has been dismissed by the head of the regional office, according to published reports.

East Chicago, around 25 miles (40 km) outside of Chicago, was home to the now defunct U.S. Smelter and Lead Refinery Inc which contaminated the facility and surrounding areas with lead and arsenic.

As for Pruitt's meeting with residents at East Chicago's USS Lead Superfund site, Frank said he and four other residents shared their experiences dealing with the city's contaminated soil and water. Over the weekend, reports emerged that Pruitt planned to shutter Region 5 entirely. But he also wishes leaders like Holcomb and Pruitt will spend more time speaking with residents directly. "I'm pleased with him making this his first visit and our collaboration will continue and we'll get this right and we won't leave until we do", said Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb.

Reports of the closure alarmed both Republican and Democratic lawmakers from around the region, which relies on the EPA to carry out work state and municipal governments can not handle alone. They cried foul over his decision to skip meeting with them at the Chicago regional office. The White House has proposed a cut to funding for the Superfund program, but Pruitt told the U.S. Conference of Mayors in March that he believes it's vital. "Hundreds of EPA employees work just a 30 minute drive from where he will be", said Mikulka.

However, it's not clear if rumors of office closures are true.

Pruitt has criticized the EPA for overreach and President Donald Trump's administration has taken steps to roll back stricter environmental regulations put in place over the past eight years.

Mikulka said that is not typical of administrators. EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt is expected to travel in the region this week, Kaplan added.

Prior to Pruitt's visit in East Chicago, about 50 environmental activists held a rally to protest cuts to the EPA and the forced evictions of residents of West Calumet.

"Seeing the face of the affected persons makes a difference".

Pruitt toured the complex with IN officials, including Gov. Eric Holcomb and Sen.

The EPA began conducting soil tests at the site in late 2009 and finally reached a consent decree with the liable companies in 2014.

"It's the EPA's objective, and my objective, to make sure the people's health is protected here in East Chicago", Pruitt said.
