Fast And Furious Takes Over Star Wars For Largest Ever Movie Launch

Fast and Furious 8: The Fate of The Furious has earned the biggest box office opening weekend in cinema history.

The franchise has one of the most diverse casts in a Hollywood blockbuster, starring Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez and Jason Statham. "There are factors from one film to the next that make them unique and certainly there were unique factors with 'Furious 7'". Furious 7 got a solid $147 million for its opening weekend last 2015.

Last weeks top film falls to number 2 this week as The Boss baby takes $52 million over the week and has now grossed $287 million in total globally. The Fate of the Furious numbers seem to mirror those of XxX: Return of Xander Cage, which only did reasonably well in the North America but was a big hit in China as well.

Led by China, which set a three-day record of US$190 million (RM836.85 million), the film brought in US$432.3 million (RM1.9 billion) in some 60 countries.

"The Fate of the Furious" is tearing up the global box office.

Furious 8, released on 12 April, is directed by F. Gary Gray. The film made $433.2 million overseas, surpassing the record $316.7 million that "Jurassic World" made abroad in its first weekend in 2015. The studio has announced that franchise will end the story with its 10th instalment so the fans must get ready for two more doses of high paced action adventures.

Without the late Paul Walker, it's pretty clear that having the star power of both Diesel and The Rock on-board for any remaining Fast & Furious films would be a good thing. It is all due to the announcement that Universal made for the movie saying a ninth and tenth installments are going to happen for the years 2019 and 2021, respectively. We would definitely listen to car-loving comedians doing a commentary track for The Fate of the Furious.
