Novice Democrat tops Georgia race, but faces runoff

Democrats hope frustration with President Donald Trump will give them a surprise victory on Tuesday in an election to fill a vacant congressional seat in suburban Atlanta that has been held by Republicans for decades.

Trump's tweet:"Despite major outside money, FAKE media support and eleven Republican candidates, BIG "R" win with runoff in Georgia". Crediting himself, Trump added, "Glad to be of help!"

"This is a very strongly Republican district and Republicans and Democrats are going to both use everything in their tool chest to try to win this seat", Dingell says.

That district had been held by former Congressman Tom Price who is now the secretary of Health and Human Services.

The Ossoff campaign was greatly hoping to avoid the runoff as Georgia's 6th district has been a GOP stronghold for generations, and with a crowded Republican field, Ossoff hoped to benefit from the fractured Republican block. As it is, he will go forward for a run-off on June 20th against Republican Karen Handel.

Trump in the final days of the campaign appeared to perceive the damage an Ossoff win would do to a presidency scoring historically low approval ratings and in which his agenda has been stymied by the courts and Congress.

The special election in Georgia's 6th Congressional District has moved into extra innings. With the GOP having a single candidate to rally behind, this race now becomes exponentially easier for Republicans to win. "Anything short of describing that as a loss is sort of inconceivable to me in the sense that's literally what they said their goal was to do".

Ossoff has drawn volunteers and donors from out of state who see the race as a way to strike a blow against Trump.

According to Real Clear Politics' poll tracking, Ossoff was the presumed front-runner as he had support in the 41 percent to 45 percent range in the race for Georgia's 6th congressional district. "This is a case of Democratic Party supporters taking a shot at Donald Trump; they can't because that election is over, so they take a shot at the party instead", the political scientist told The Straits Times over the phone.

Ossoff was one of three Jews - another Democrat and a Republican - running Tuesday.

"National Right to Life is pleased to endorse Karen Handel, whose position on life reflects the true values of Georgia's voters", said Karen Cross, National Right to Life political director.
