Trump says wall 'important too' against drugs

WASHINGTON - With a budget deadline looming, President Donald Trump plans a whirlwind of activities seeking to highlight accomplishments while putting fresh pressure on congressional Democrats to pay for a wall on the U.S. -Mexico border, even if that pressure risks a possible government shutdown.

A Republican congressional aide said Democrats may agree to some aspects of the border wall, including new surveillance equipment and access roads, estimated to cost around $380 million.

Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney even said the White House would trade $1 of funding for Obamacare to Democrats for $1 in funding for Trump's promised border wall.

Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.), while a supporter of Trump's wall, described plans to include money for increased border security as "problematical" over the phone with Independent Journal Review on Friday. She called the wall an "immoral, ineffective, unwise proposal". Thus, it seems fairly likely that the decision about whether or not the federal government will shut down or continue to operate next week will likely fall squarely on Trump's shoulders.

Schumer charged Trump with breaking his promise to be the president of - as he described them as a candidate - the forgotten men and women of America.

Mulvaney said Trump is still open, though, to signing a government funding bill that does not include wall funding.

Trump said during his campaign that Mexico would pay for the structure, estimated to cost perhaps tens of billions of dollars. Democrats have insisted that they will not vote for any spending bill that gives the White House money or flexibility to begin construction of a border barrier.

"The Democrats don't want money from budget going to border wall despite the fact that it will stop drugs and very bad MS 13 gang members", Trump tweeted Sunday. "We certainly would like to - we have a responsibility to control our borders".

On Saturday, Trump will hold a major rally in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, as a sort of cap of those first 100 days.

As for the timeline, the administration now says it aims to overhaul the country's tax code by late 2017.

Israel marks Holocaust remembrance day
Quoting Theodor Herzl's "If you will, it is no dream", Trump added that Israel is a "great nation that has risen from the desert". Anti-Semitism had not disappeared, and "it would be naive to think" that it would do so in the foreseeable future, he said.

Trump told The Associated Press his plan will cut taxes for both individuals and businesses, but it's expected to be more of a broad outline than a specific plan.

Trump's tweets included a shot at Democrats in which he drew parallels between border-wall funding and continued federal payments for subsidies under the Affordable Care Act.

So far, negotiations have proven hard, with disputes over the wall and health law subsidies to help low-income people afford health insurance.

There's also been little talk lately of the White House's call for $18 billion in immediate domestic agency cuts as part of the package.

"By visiting this 'winter White House, ' Trump is belatedly fulfilling the dream of Mar-a-Lago's original owner and designer", the article goes on, claiming its builder, Marjorie Merriweather Post, "willed the estate to the US government, intending it to be used as a winter White House for the USA president to entertain visiting foreign dignitaries".

To that end, Pelosi said a short-term CR would only be required if a deal has been struck but more time is needed to move the compromise measure spanning the rest of fiscal 2017 - through September - to the House and Senate floors.

"We expect the priorities of the president to be reflected", Priebus said, citing ongoing talks with the House and the Senate.

The United States embassy in the apparently promoting President Trump's "winter White House" on its official webpage, sparking renewed concerns about Trump's potential conflicts of interest.

The wall has been the subject of some of Trump's recent tweets, where he vowed that Mexico would eventually pay for the wall's construction.
