Alt-right group to rally after cancellation of Coulter talk

"I thought I might just stroll around the graveyard of free speech in America", Coulter wrote in an email to The Daily Caller News Foundation.

After insisting she would go through with her speech on Thursday, with or without university approval, Coulter changed her mind as support from student organizers collapsed.

Campus Republicans, the group which was helping plan the Thursday speaking event, reportedly said Tuesday that it will not host the event at UC Berkeley.

Alt-right figure Richard Spencer chastised Coulter on Twitter, calling her and other conservatives weak for backing down.

YAF said in a statement on its website Tuesday that Berkeley "failed to meet our demands" for a safe environment for the speech. The Berkeley College Republicans and the foundation filed a federal free speech lawsuit Monday, accusing the university of using security concerns as a guise to censor conservative viewpoints.

Outside groups representing the far left and far right have clashed in the city several times over the past few months in a fight club atmosphere that university administrators say they have not seen in many years, if ever.

Troy Worden, president of the Berkeley College Republicans, said Wednesday that the university didn't provide a venue. YAF is pressing forward with its lawsuit against UC-Berkeley, and looks forward to the day when First Amendment freedoms are enjoyed by conservative students.

While that was the original objective, Jandhyala acknowledged that Coulter may have her own agenda now in coming to the campus.

I'm so sorry Berkeley canceled my speech. And the Young America's Foundation said it could not "jeopardize the safety of its staff or students" in the face of the dangers posed by anarchist groups protesting the event.

Sproul Plaza would be symbolic-it was where the Free Speech Movement protests started in the 1960s-although the administration fears the potential violencein an outdoor area.

In February, swarms of Black Bloc protesters bent on disruption swept into the crowd of students demonstrating against Milo Yiannopoulos, then a writer for Breitbart, and within minutes broke windows and set fire to a propane tank.

"We vindicate constitutional rights in court", she said.

[Originally w] e assumed UC Berkeley would take all steps necessary to ensure the safety of students attending the educational event. The university had said the speech would create security concerns and tried to move the speech to May 2.

With multiple chapters across the country, Oath Keepers describes itself as a group composed of former and current law enforcement and military members.

The bigger the demonstration, the louder the uproar, the more significant the threat of violence, the more proof Coulter has that she's an exciting and unsafe figure conservatives can use to tweak liberals.

At Berkeley, three times this year protesters wearing masks have turned demonstrations about speech into unsafe mob confrontations, with injuries, fires and massive property damage.

Campus spokesman Dan Mogulof said UC Berkeley officials had not heard directly from Coulter on Wednesday. But canceling Yiannopoulos' speech angered many who believe conservative opinions are being smothered at the nation's college campuses.
