France says analysis shows Syria regime behind sarin attack

Ayrault said they knew "from a certain source, that the process of manufacturing the collected sarin is typical of the method developed in Syrian regime laboratories".

Syria on Thursday accused France of concealing the real identity of those behind a deadly suspected chemical attack, a day after Paris said it had proof the Damascus regime was responsible.

Mr Ayrault also said French intelligence services showed only Syrian Government forces could have launched such an attack using a bomber taking off from the Sharyat airbase.

The six-page report, however, said that among the elements that were found in the samples included a chemical called hexamine, which is a hallmark of sarin produced by the Syrian government.

Those whose names have surfaced in relation to chemical weapons attacks and other alleged war crimes are more likely to be singled out in any postwar investigations.

The chemical attack prompted US President Donald Trump to order a cruise missile strike on a Syrian air base.

Russian Federation has previously called for an global probe, and Peskov expressed regret that the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, or OPCW, has turned down the Syrian government's offers to visit the site of the attack and investigate. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has dismissed the incident as a fabrication.

And if you still have some doubt, yesterday France announced further evidence that the sarin used in the attack was identical to the mixture used previously by the Syrian military. I don't think Assad will ever use chemical weapons again.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Russia's position on the attack is "unchanged" and that "that the only way to establish the truth about what happened near Idlib is an impartial global investigation".

"We take Syria's disregard for innocent human life very seriously, and will relentlessly pursue and shut down the financial networks of all individuals involved with the production of chemical weapons used to commit these atrocities", US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said commenting on the move.

Meanwhile, global leaders yesterday urged all nations to help "banish forever the evil of chemical weapons", as the world's watchdog warned that decades-long progress towards eliminating them was under threat.

"Employees of Syria's Scientific Studies and Research Center [or SSRC] have been put on a US blacklist", NPR's Michele Kelemen reports, "which means any assets they might have in the USA will be frozen and Americans are barred from doing any business with them". The Obama administration promoted the agreement and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the worldwide body that monitors such accords, called the agreement a success, the Daily Caller noted.

Earlier this year, former Obama National Security Advisor Susan Rice proclaimed that "we were able to find a solution that didn't necessitate the use of force that actually removed the chemical weapons that were known from Syria, in a way that the use of force would never have accomplished".
