Genyo Takeda will retire from Nintendo in next month

Takeda has been credited with overseeing every Nintendo home console released during his tenure and making notable contributions such as designing the N64's analogue stick. While these are both fantastic in their own right, Shigeru Miyamoto and Satoru Iwata both referred to Takeda as the first game designer at Nintendo due to his involvement with the company back in 1976.

Alongside its latest investor report, Nintendo has announced that Genyo Takeda, one of the company's longest tenured and most influential designers, is retiring at the end of June. Takeda has been at Nintendo for over 45 years since the 1970s.

While Nintendo hasn't confirmed as yet if Takeda is simply stepping down from his position as director or if he's going to retire completely. He developed the analog stick controller for the Nintendo 64 and led development of the Wii. Takeda's team was renamed as Integrated Research & Development in 2003.

Hired in 1971 by Gunpei Yokoi -creator of Game Boy-, Takeda has worked mainly on the hardware front but contributed significantly as a director and producer to develop games like Punch-Out!, Pilotwings 64 and Dr. Mario 64.

As a game designer, Takeda's best known work came during the '80s, when he led the development of the Punch-Out! and StarTropics series, but his most lasting achievements are as a hardware designer.

"In the face of your unbelievable passing it will surely take some time before we can emerge from this deep sorrow", Takeda said.
