A Westpac rescue helicopter comes in to land at Curio Bay

The woman, aged in her 20s, was bodyboarding this afternoon at Curio Bay in the South Island when the shark attacked her leg, St John Ambulance said.

A French tourist has been attacked by a shark in Curio Bay.

The young woman is recovering from moderate leg injuries after she was attacked while surfing at Porpoise Bay in the Catlins.

Nick Smart, who runs the Caitlin Surf School, said the woman was in the water with friends when the shark attacked "out of nowhere".

She remained calm after the attack.

She does have a nasty gash on the back of her leg.

"She handled it really, really well", Mr Smart added. "There wasn't a ton of blood, obviously it wasn't an arterial bleed", Mr Smart said. I assured her she wasn't going to die.

"I saw somebody running and instantly had a very strong feeling that things were not right", Mr Smart said.

He said the woman, who had been wearing a wetsuit, was moved to a beach house on a stretcher before being flown about 100 miles (160km) to Dunedin Hospital.

Casey Keen told Fairfax the woman was left with two deep puncture wounds above her knees from three bites.

After a man was attacked while spearfishing in Hawaii and a kayaker bitten in California, we take a look at other notable shark attacks in recent...

At this time, she remains hospitalized in stable condition and is continuing to have her injuries assessed, hospital officials said. A surfer was bitten three times from his thigh to his calf in 2014 in what Smart said at the time was the first shark attack in the Catlins area.

The last recorded fatality was a 47-year-old who was attacked at tourist beach near Auckland in 2013.

Marine biologist Riley Elliot says shark attack statistics are very low in comparison to the number of humans in the sea.
