"Strong leadership is about standing up for the many, and not the few", he said.

Starmer said Labour accepted that immigration rules must change after Brexit but said the party does not believe that immigration should be the "overarching priority".

Labour said on Tuesday (Wednesday NZT) it wanted to change the tone of the upcoming divorce talks with the European Union talks by immediately guaranteeing the rights of millions of European Union citizens in Britain if it won the vote.

All right, so we have all read or heard her reasoning on the news - she wanted to ensure stability for the negotiations to leave Europe and the only way to do that was to have a general election to - of course I am paraphrasing - get everyone on board. That is the number one consideration.

The implications of this general election will have significant ramifications for financial services - and the country - as the parties outline genuine policy and political differences.

She said she was seeking a clear mandate from the people for her Brexit plans and to quell opposition in Parliament to her plans.

Labour trail the Conservatives by more than 20 points in opinion polls, and the party is also divided over Corbyn's left-wing leadership and strategy on Brexit.

Two out of three Labour voters opposed Brexit in last year's referendum but 70 per cent of Labour MPs represent constituencies which voted Leave, placing the party in a predicament unlike that of any other.

Labour intends to ditch the Government's Great Repeal Bill, which Sir Keir claimed would harm protections for workers as well as environmental safeguards.

Experts said Jeremy Corbyn's party was facing "a kicking" in Wales in the May 4 council elections and is "heading for disaster" in Scotland, where it could lose control of all the local authorities it holds, as the Scottish National Party and Conservatives reap the benefits.

Carwyn Jones, the Labour leader in Wales, later described May's visit as a stunt.

"The Labour Party can not spend all its time trying to rub out yesterday", he said, arguing that Labour must "genuinely accept the result" of last year's referendum.

"It's yet another nonsensical Jeremy Corbyn plan for the future in terms of Brexit", said Mrs May.

Mr Healey, a housing minister in Gordon Brown's government, said that decades of missed housing targets was a "test that all us as politicians have to meet".

Mr Corbyn said Mrs May was not a strong leader because she was "weak against the strong", taking on her central campaign message.

She added: "What you need is a government which has a clear plan for those negotiations".

In addition to this, 20 Labour, Liberal Democrat and conservative MPs, who advocate a close relationship with the European Union, will be provided with support from activists.
