Trump to Italian PM, US has no Role in Libya

NY [U.S.A.], April 21 (ANI): United States President Donald Trump and Italy's Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni held a joint press conference at the White House and talked about varied topics, ranging from terrorism, and reciprocity to the recent Paris shooting.

Gentiloni said they had discussed the importance of fighting the division in Libya that has led to the emergence of Islamic State in the country, sparked violence and added to the flight of refugees across the Mediterranean.

Stabilization in Libya is a top priority for Italy, especially following a recent agreement to stop the flow of Libyan migrants into their country.

Trump further praised Italy as a "key partner" in the fight against Islamic State (IS) terrorism, but made it clear that the USA would not send ground troops to stabilize conflict-ridden Libya, though Gentiloni pointed out that the chaos there had aided the spread of IS influence in the region.

President Obama's intervention into Libya, backed by the North American Treaty Organization (NATO), turned the country into a haven for radical Islam after disposing secular dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Ansar al-Shariah, an affiliate of the ISIS extremist group, based in Syria and Iraq - has been operating in Libya since 2012. We need a stable and unified Libya.

"I$3 do not see a role in Libya".

"They are not living up to the spirit of the agreement, I can tell you that", Trump said of the Iranians on Thursday, though he did not mention any specific violations. He also dwelled on the "common commitment against terrorism" between Rome and Washington as well as the necessity to socially and economically collaborate with Muslim communities to effectively combat it. We're being very effective in that regard.

Trump, who has repeatedly called on North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies to boost defence spending, also pointed to some 30,000 United States troops stationed in Italy and called on Italians to "pay their full and fair share for the cost of defence".

Trump has pulled the United States out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a pact that he called "a disaster".

The outcome of France's presidential election is being closely watched for signs that Europe is moving toward nationalist candidates who advocate the European Union's dissolution.

"And it is also in my opinion - in my very strong opinion - important for the United States".

"We're getting out of the nation-building business", Trump announced on April 27 of past year, describing his foreign policy as "America first". "We will help it be strong".

With Italy set to host a summit of the world's major industrial nations, Gentiloni can shape the agenda on behalf of other European leaders wary of Trump's position on some long-standing agreements.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker even responded with a joke he was ready to encourage U.S. independence movements if Trump failed to tone down his Brexit support.
