Turkey's opposition loses appeals against referendum

Meanwhile, parliament agreed to extend the state of emergency - already in place for nine months - for another three months to July 19.

The United States continues to support Turkey's democratic development, to which commitment to the rule of law and a diverse and free media remain essential.

Yildirim said the "the path to seek rights" should be limited to legal objections and urged the opposition to accept the vote's outcome.

The opposition has cited several problems with how the vote was conducted.

The country's main opposition parties - including the pro-Kurdish HDP - have challenged Erdogan's 51.4 percent victory, saying Sunday's vote was rigged because it included unstamped ballot papers.

Monitors from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, who also listed numerous problems, said the move undermined important election safeguards.

It would dispense with the prime minister's post and centralize the entire executive bureaucracy under the president, giving Erdogan the direct power to appoint ministers.

Kılıçdaroğlu said he respected the nation's will but the decision on unsealed ballots had overshadowed the results.

"The people's will has been reflected at the ballot box, and the debate is over", Mr Yildirim told his parliamentary group. Everyone and all sections - and the main opposition party in particular- must show respect. "It is wrong to speak after the people have spoken".

Given the close results of the April 16 referendum in Turkey, the only possible path to national consensus is compliance with basic democratic norms and respect for the commitments arising from Turkey's membership of global organisations, Bulgaria's Foreign Ministry said on April 18.

Similar queues are also reported in front of an election board office in Istanbul.

"It is clear that invalidating the votes of the citizens who exercised their constitutional rights [on Sunday's referendum] will damage the voters' right to participate in the electoral process", the YSK said in a statement on its website.

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the people and government of Turkey on the successful conclusion of the country's referendum on Monday.

.

"Turkey is ready to resume the talks over the issue", Turkish president added.

The new system takes full effect at the next election, now slated for November 2019. Other changes are to be implemented sooner, including scrapping a requirement that the president not be a member of any political party.

However, asked about Mr Erdogan's suggestion in his victory speech that he could hold a referendum on reintroducing the death penalty, the commission spokesman described it as "the reddest of red lines" with regard to Turkey's decade-long attempt to join the bloc.

"Therefore we do not have any difficulties on that front", Erdogan said. Tana de Zulueta, head of the observer mission, told reporters that the group had paid a courtesy call and held a "cordial" meeting with electoral board members. The narrow win by the Erdogan camp has been followed by concern among worldwide observers that the Turkish voting process was not fair, while European leaders have expressed concern about the divisiveness of the vote in Turkey. "We share our report and we completed our mandate".

In Istanbul, thousands of "no" supporters continued their demonstrations Tuesday, carrying banners that said "Don't give in" and chanting "Thief, Murderer, Erdogan!"

Protesters were fewer in number in Ankara, where they were outnumbered by police officers.

Kilicdaroglu accused the board of breaking the country's laws during the referendum.

US President Donald Trump has become the first Western leader to congratulate Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for winning a controversial referendum that grants him far-reaching, largely unchecked powers.
