U.S. forces in Afghanistan on Thursday struck an Islamic State tunnel complex in eastern Afghanistan with"the mother of all

The Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB) bomb dropped by the Afghanistan on April 13 killed at least 36 terrorists, according to the Afghan military.

"Our team is in the area and they are doing clearance, so the figure might change as they find more bodies", said Dawlat Waziri, a spokesman for the Afghan Ministry of Defence. Afghan officials also said there were no civilians casualties in the bombing, which was coordinated with them.

The 30 feet long MOAB is an improved replacement for the unguided 15,000-pound BLU-82 Daisy Cutter bomb which was widely used in previous conflicts, most notably the Vietnam War.The weapon produces a tremendous explosion which is effective against hard-target entrances, soft-to-medium surface targets, clearing tunnels and caves and anti-personnel purposes.

Before the strike, CBS New correspondent David Martin says there were an estimated 600 to 800 ISIS fighters in Afghanistan.

General John Nicholson, the top United States commander in Afghanistan, said: 'The enemy had created bunkers, tunnels and extensive mine fields, and this weapon was used to reduce those obstacles so that we could continue our offensive in Nangarhar'.

"We had persistent surveillance over the area before, during and after the operation, and now we have Afghan and USA forces on the site, and see no evidence of civilian casualties", Nicholson said.

"The United States takes the fight against ISIS very seriously and in order to defeat the group we must deny them operational space, which we did", Spicer said.

US President Donald Trump said Thursday the Afghanistan bombing was "another successful job".

But former President Hamid Karzai accused the USA of using Afghanistan as "a testing ground for new and risky weapons".

On Friday, U.S. Army Gen. John W. Nicholson Jr. called it "the right weapon against the right target".

I was sleeping when we heard a loud explosion.

USA drops Mother of all bombs on IS militants in Afghanistan. However, taking pre-emptive military action in advance of another test would be a massive and unexpected escalation that could place South Korea, a US ally, at risk of retaliation from the North. Seoul, a city of 14 million people, is less than 30 miles from parts of the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas.

"Ultimately the deal has to be made between the Taliban and the Afghan government and civil society, and it has to be some sort of enduring peace, and the regional powers, particularly Pakistan, have to be brought in", Goodfellow said.

But the massive blast still terrified villagers 20 miles away across the border in Pakistan.

The U.S. has had a small presence in the country for several years, primarily special operations troops to help train allied fighters and to guide airstrikes.

The statement said it is the responsibility of Afghans, not the US, to remove the Islamic State group from the country.
