Facebook Talks Up AR At F8 Conference

Facebook isn't the only corporation getting in on these new developments, but it's definitely the one investing the most into it.

The three categories of the augmented reality content are; overlaying information, adding virtual objects and enhancing real objects.

At the F8 event Facebook also launched a new virtual reality app, Facebook Spaces, created to let users hang out in virtual environments. In this virtual world, users can hang out with avatar versions of their friends in a virtual world.

The social network announced several new products at its F8 Developer Conference in San Jose this week, with a strong focus on virtual and augmented reality.

Launched yesterday by Mark Zuckerberg, F8 2017, Facebook's annual developer's conference, opened with some major new features coming to your Facebook page.

"I am confident now we are going to push this augmented-reality platform forward", Zuckerberg said, adding that the technology would eventually be incorporated into eyeglasses.

With Developer Circles, Facebook is targeting developer communities to connect and collaborate. But Facebook could still have the edge on rivals such as Snapchat, which also launched some augmented reality features on Tuesday, likely to coincide with Facebook's news. They're highly likely to become a bit hit with users.

Zuckerberg said people could use the technology to leave a virtual note for a friend at a bar, or to find virtual street art on a wall that in real life is blank. Now, it seems like the social media platform wants to make AR accessible to smartphone cameras so that people wouldn't need to necessarily buy a high-tech eyewear. Parts of the website may not work as expected without them. "People already have cameras and are used to having fun and being creative with them", he said.

For game lovers Facebook's buyout of Oculus VR has set up the platform for Facebook Spaces.

The possibilities for AR are only limited by a developer's imagination and there are plenty of ways in which the real world can be manipulated using this technology. He also said it's possible we're 10 years out. The company claimed that Workplace is being used by 14,000 businesses.

Messenger will also let people chat with outside businesses as a group. The idea is to simplify what might otherwise require a flurry of texts and sharing of links.
