Nadal set for history in Monte Carlo final

23 de abril de 2017, 10:37Monte Carlo, Apr 23 (Prensa Latina) Spanish Rafael Nadal captured an incredible 10th Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters crown today in beating fellow Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-1, 6-3 in the 76-minute final. In addition, at the age of 30 years and 10 months Nadal is also the 4th oldest victor of the Masters 1000 trophy, behind Roger Federer, Andre Agassi and Ivan Ljubicic. Little did he know that 12 years later he would be winning his 10th title in Monte Carlo-marking the first time an ATP player has won a singles title that many times in the Open Era. "After that, I was confident enough to keep going, winning in Barcelona, in Rome, then in Roland Garros".

Nadal has lost three finals so far this year, including that at January's Australian Open against Swiss legend Roger Federer.

It was Nadal's 50th career title on his favored surface, moving him one clear of Argentine Guillermo Vilas.

The 14-time Grand Slam champion had won his two previous encounters against Ramos and the 15th seed failed to snap that run on Sunday.

"It has been an incredible week on one of the most important events on the tour", said Nadal shortly after his victory in yesterday's final victory. "I imagine the ball was out but I was on the other side, I could not see the mark", said Nadal, who will play his 11th Monte Carlo final on Sunday.

"We were both nervous at the start but in the second set it was a good match".

Talking about the match after having lost it, Goffin said that he feels that with the passing time, his results are only getting better. He will also have his sights set on a 10th title in Barcelona next week - Nadal's previous career title was there, nearly one year ago. Goffin was asked to replay game point after holding his serve for what would have been a 4-2 lead.

"Win 10 times in such an important event like Monte Carlo is something hard to describe the feeling". He also said that he thinks that he is playing better and he has more confidence.

"It's not easy to play a final, to play against Rafa Nadal, to play with no sun today".

"Then it's obvious I would like to win".

Ramos-Vinolas had a chance to finish the match in straight sets but Cilic won the second set tiebreak to force the deciding set.

It was very important for the lower-ranked player to open the match like he planned and shake off the pressure from his back, but Nadal was pushing strong from the very first minute, creating 3 break points in game 2.
