Samsung posts biggest quarterly profit since 2013

This is an increase of 3.22 trillion won ($2.85 billion), 48 percent higher than the profit for the same quarter a year before.

Samsung has posted its best quarterly profits since 2013 with strong memory chip and display sale, despite Sliding mobile sales. Samsung's mobile division achieved sales of KRW2.07 trillion or $1.84 billion, which represents a 47% increase from the same period in 2016.

Samsung, which is the world's top maker of memory chips, smartphones and televisions, has been going through hard times with its boss, Jay Y. Lee, mired in a political corruption scandal and the financial hit from its fire prone Galaxy Note 7.

People pass by Samsung Electronics' product promotion section at the company's Seocho office in southern Seoul on Thursday.

The company goes on to state: "Looking to the second quarter, the company plans to actively address the expected continuous rise in demand for OLED panels, including flexible displays".

Despite the Galaxy Note 7 debacle and company head in jail on corruption charges, Samsung Electronics reported its best quarter profits in more than three years. Tech analysts and observers, as well as the public who purchased the problematic phablet, were all keeping watch on the new flagship smartphones upon its release to see if they will experience the same issues that they had with the Note 7.

The Note 7 disaster wasn't the only setback the company experienced during this time. Shares of Samsung Electronics ended Thursday at a new historic high of 2,192,000 won, up 52,000 won or 2.43 percent from the previous session. Lee remains in detention by the Korean authorities.

There's been several big and persistent iPhone 8 rumours we've been hearing in recent months, as the cavalcade of leaks and speculation builds. Of course, you could just buy one of the many cases that Samsung launched along with the S8 this year. This would seem to be a valid strategy, as the company has been accused of delivering a confusing range of products in the past.

So it's very likely the new gadget will be a variant of the Note range. In fact, some units had a red tint and Samsung asserts it is not a problem.
