The young Edmonton Oilers proved to be quick learners, scoring twice shorthanded to beat the San Jose Sharks 2-0 in Game 2 of their first-round series on Friday.

It was Edmonton's first playoff win since 2006. Defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic led San Jose with two points (both assists) in Game 1 after registering 12 (one goal) in 24 contests during the team's run to the Stanley Cup Final last postseason.

The Edmonton Oilers are providing hockey fans with one more way to catch Game 3 of the playoff series with the San Jose Sharks. Joonas Donskoi came around behind the net and fed the puck in front on the backhand to Ward, who redirected the puck past Talbot. He shot again, this time through Jones' pads. But despite a long history with numerous key players on the Sharks, McLellan sees little advantage.

Their work paid off with the tying goal at the 5:22 mark of the third period.

The Oilers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in that game but were suffocated by a relentless Sharks forecheck after that.

"We got the chance and I snuck it in", said Karlsson.

Edmonton became the third team in National Hockey League history to win a playoff game by scoring exclusively shorthanded goals.

And, other stars were held out of the Sharks' final game of the regular season, including defenseman Justin Braun, veteran forward Joel Ward and, most notably, captain Joe Pavelski, who tied for the team lead with 29 goals. Milan Lucic, who got an assist on the Klefbom goal, then snapped a wrist shot past Jones at 17:07.

McLellan said he'll continue to send McDavid over the boards if they're down a man. Couture is also optimistic about playing as he recovers from taking a puck to the face, which caused him to miss the season's final seven games. After getting some of their playoff jitters out of the way, the Sharks dominated most of the game.

Tomas Hertl received an impossible task in Game One of the Stanley Cup Playoffs: stop Connor McDavid.

"That's a good team over there and moving forward that's the way we're going to have to play if we want to win". "(McDavid) gets his eyes up, he's going to make plays.

"Whether they're healthy or not healthy, you try to be physical on guys no matter what", Lucic said.

"I can't say enough good things about the penalty kill tonight", said Talbot. Sharks C Joe Thornton, who has been nursing a knee issue over the last week, was not able to go. "Tonight we did all those little things".

That doesn't come as a big surprise to the Sharks or coach Pete DeBoer.

"You don't get many shots from your the neutral zone or your end, so it's as simple as that", McLellan said. "We've seen that before". They didn't get their first shot of the middle frame until the eight minute mark and their second until the 14 minute mark (both on power plays) as Edmonton seemed to get stronger by the shift. "We expect it and we'll deal with it like we always have".

In short, they looked very much like that 103-point team that challenged for the division title in the regular season.

Hopes are high after the Sharks made it to the Stanley Cup Finals a year ago. It just happens that games 83 to 90, we're going to play the same team.
