Penny Dreadful's Shazad Latif, back in December, was announced as Kol, commanding officer of the Klingons, along with Chris Obi and Mary Chieffo.

Rekha Sharma will star as "Commander Landry", the security officer of the Starship Discovery.

After the retro fetishization of the last three movies, the prospect of a new crew, ship and missions is an exciting prospect for Trekkies. Spock's father Sarek is confirmed to feature as a Vulcan Astrophysicist, with robots apparently due to feature and the tantalizing promise of "an incident and an event in Star Trek history that's been talked about but never explored".

Have at it, Trekkies: What do you think of this latest Star Trek: Discovery casting news? Sharma's television credits include Battlestar Galactica and The 100. Latif is now set to play Lieutenant Tyler, who is described as a Starfleet officer in the Federation. Mitchell's credits include Jericho and Frequency.

Clare McConnell: Will play Dennas, a leader in the Klingon Empire.

Damon Runyan: He's scheduled to play Ujilli, a leader in the Klingon Empire. His film credits include Dim the Fluorescents, slated for release this fall.

No official release date for Star Trek: Discovery has been announced, but it is expected to debut on CBS sometime this year before moving to CBS All Access, the network's proprietary streaming service. EPs are Alex Kurtzman, Bryan Fuller, Heather Kadin, Gretchen J. Berg & Aaron Harberts, Akiva Goldsman, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth.
