'Star Wars: Episode IX' release date announced

The "Star Wars" anthology film focused on young Han Solo will test the Memorial Day weekend first with its previously announced May 25, 2018, release.

That's a marked difference from the previous instalments in the trilogy, with The Force Awakens being released in December and The Last Jedi now following suit, as did Rogue One.

At this point, "Star Wars IX" is still in the pre-production stage. However, it does appear as if Disney and Lucasfilm are digging in their heels with this film, and will attempt to try their luck with a summer release schedule.

Star Wars: Episode IX will now be released on May 24, 2019. Fisher's brother, Todd Fisher, and her daughter, Billie Lourd, gave Disney the green light to use recent, unused movie footage of Fisher as Leia for 2019's Star Wars: Episode IX. Ford will be around 77 years old when that movie comes out.

And while it's not part of the release date announcement, last we heard Trevorrow is expected to write Star Wars: Episode IX, too, with frequent collaborator Derek Connolly.

On Tuesday, an offical press e-mail from Disney listed all the release dates for upcoming feature films through the year 2021. That means we'll only have about a year and a half to wait in between Episodes 8 and 9 instead of the two years we'll have waited between Episodes 7 and 8 by the time the latter releases.

The Indiana Jones movie will star Harrison Ford in the iconic role and will, as all the previous installments have, be directed by Steven Spielberg.

Disney also announced the live-action Lion King remake, starring Donald Glover as Simba, will be released on July 19, 2019.
