Jets double down on SEC safeties with Marcus Maye at No. 39

It's a odd pick after the Jets took safety Jamal Adams in the first round. They have to be fast and tough to keep up with receivers and tight ends who keep getting larger and faster.

One day after picking Jamal Adams, regarded in scouting circles as a transformative safety, the New York Jets evidently felt their secondary needed a little more transforming. LSU safety Jamal Adams was stellar last season, as was Ohio State cornerback Marshon Lattimore. Two years ago, the Jets selected defensive end Leonard Williams at No. 6 after he unexpectedly slid down the draft board.

The New England Patriots are without a pick until the third round in this year's draft, so instead of evaluating picks from their own team tonight, Patriots' fans were left to focus on other NFL Draft news.

General manager Mike Maccagnan, explaining the unconventional strategy, chalked it up to his best-player-available credo, saying Maye was too good to pass up. This was not the year to give in to the usual quarterback panic - the fear that you'll miss one if you don't grab one right now, no matter who he is and how much you had to talk yourself into liking him.

NO QB: With veteran Josh McCown and the inexperienced Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg, there was some speculation that the Jets might try to take a quarterback early.

"We have a veteran quarterback and two young quarterbacks, and we're going to go from there", Maccagnan said.

Todd Bowles agreed, as he likes to use three-safety sets.

Because so many college teams are throwing more passes than any time in history, National Football League teams are getting larger, faster and talented wide receivers. NY will still have to find some help at the quarterback position, but their secondary was torn apart last season.

While the general manager said the injury didn't necessarily affect the Jets' approach to the draft, the rookies give NY some solid alternatives. That could change this year with the selection of Leggett.

Adams didn't figure to last long in the draft, as the LSU standout was ranked as the No. 4 overall prospect on Matt Miller's big board.

"I was definitely surprised I slipped, but at the same time, everything happens for a reason", Adams said during a conference call. I love the kid.

The Jaguars addressed most of their defensive needs in free agency, leaving them to go heavy on the offense in the draft.

The Jets could have taken a cornerback like Florida's Quincy Wilson at No. 39. His senior season ended prematurely when a broken arm cost him the campaign's final four contests and drill work at the NFL Combine. "We'll see how it goes if that was the situation".

The Jets' locker room had its share of issues last season.
