Police shoot woman in London

A 16-year-old boy, a man and woman, both aged 20, were arrested during the operation in Willesden area of north London.

Police said the injured woman was the subject of an ongoing investigation.

The investigation is ongoing but the threat is "contained", London's Metropolitan Police said Friday. Six people have been arrested as part of the probe, while the woman - who is also suspected of involvement -remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

The Prime Minister, who was away on a campaign visit at the time, said the operation showed Britain's spies are "on alert" as she hailed the bravery of the police and the intelligence and security services.

Scotland Yard said in a statement: "The man, aged in his late 20s, was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and on suspicion of the commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism". He didn't give details of how the woman was shot.

In footage shot by a witness, what sounds like several shots ring out as police surround the row house on Thursday evening.

Police said knives were recovered during the operation and that there was "no immediate known threat" to the public.

The arrests came just hours after police swooped on a man carrying a bag of knives in Whitehall, a stone's throw from Downing Street.

The 27-year-old, who was being monitored by British intelligence agents and police, remains in custody.

He was identified on Friday as Khalid Mohamed Omar Ali, a British national who is believed to have gone to school in Tottenham, north London, but was not born in the UK. British media said he grew up in London.

Five people died in the terrorist attack in March, when 52-year-old Khalid Masood drove a vehicle into pedestrians crossing the busy Westminster Bridge then later tried to gain access to Parliament.

"Yesterday was an extraordinary day in London", Deputy Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu said.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd said she had spoken to the Met about both incidents and thanked them for their actions.

Counterterrorism police say 13 potential attacks have been foiled in the last four years.

Meanwhile, police are continuing to question the man who was detained in a dramatic stop-and-search operation on Parliament Street, a stone's throw from the parliament building, May's office and government departments. A further woman, 43, was arrested in Kent.

It happened as officers raided a house in the north-west of the city. "I thought maybe it is guns or something, or drugs or something". They made her take the veil off while they searched her in a doorway.

Kevin Scott and Paisley Dodds contributed to this story.

Ms Sabanov said the Muslim woman was "screaming really loud" and they had previously "never suspected anything at all".
