State lawmaker arrested for drunk driving

He just announced a bid for the 38th District's Senate seat last month.

A state lawmaker from Michigan's Upper Peninsula has reportedly been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.

That's according to arrest records in Clinton County.

State Rep. John Kivela, a Democrat from Marquette, is charged with driving "super drunk" with a blood alcohol level of at least.17 - more than twice the legal limit - when pulled over by deputies in Clinton County, near Lansing on Monday afternoon, WWJ reports. Jenue would not disclose the breath readings the man gave, but said they were high enough to potentially justify a "super drunk charge".

According to the Clinton County Sheriff's Office, Kivela was arrested today for Operating Under the Influence with a Blood Alcohol Content of.17 or more.

He is scheduled to appear in the Clinton County District Court for arraignment at 2 p.m. on May 18.

Police said in 2015 he was driving 80 miles per hour on a freeway near Lansing, was swerving in and out of traffic and almost caused an accident.

He later pleaded guilty to a charge of operating while intoxicated, first offense, and the "super drunk" charge was dropped. After that arrest, Kivela said he entered a treatment program.
