A leadership challenge after the Brexit vote failed to unseat Mr Corbyn and for many Labour MPs it became a case of putting their heads down and getting on with what the situation as best they could.

His party is lagging behind the Conservatives in the opinion polls but Mr Corbyn said he visualised the election of a Labour government next month.

Corbyn is in Manchester today to officially launch Labour's general election campaign.

"I'm serious about winning the election", Mr Corbyn told BuzzFeed.

A-level student Jacob, who skipped school to be at the rally, said they came along because they hoped a Corbyn victory would help the club get back on top.

Labour leader launches election campaign with call to 'convince the skeptical and undecided'. That parliamentary majority will strengthen her hand both vis-à-vis the opposition, but also against her backbenchers.

Another Labour mayor, London's Sadiq Khan, has said people are "unclear" about the party's position on Brexit, and Labour faces the challenge of trying to appeal to both sides of last year's European Union referendum debate. "A Brexit that safeguards the future of Britain's vital industries, a Brexit that paves the way to a genuinely fairer society, protecting human rights, and an upgraded economy".

However Labour insiders say that the party's failure to publish a list of target seats for the General Election highlights the fact it is braced for a poor result.

Local election candidates blamed an unpopular Mr Corbyn for heavy losses for Labour in last week's council elections, revealing how voters described him as "radioactive".

Corbyn's planning ahead may be regarded by some as prescient: a poll by ICM for the Guardian yesterday but the Conservatives a record 22 points ahead of Labour.

Speaking to the BBC's Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg he said that Labour would secure a good exit deal with the EU.

"When Labour wins there will be a reckoning for those who thought they could get away with asset stripping our industry".

When asked if there was "a chink of a possibility" that Brexit could be aborted if Labour was in power, he instead attacked Theresa May's tactic of being "abusive to people across the Channel".

He said: "We have four weeks to ruin their party. We have four weeks to have a chance to take our wealth back".

The increase in corporation tax to 26% by 2020-21 will still leave it at the lowest rate in the G7, Labour said - although U.S. president Donald Trump has vowed to slash the rate in his country to 15%.
