North Korea Accuses CIA of Trying to Assassinate Kim Jong Un

North Korea maintains extensive surveillance operations over its own population, and open dissent against the regime is considered extremely hard.

KCNA continued to tell the story including all the details but eventually said that it wasn't successful.

The war of words between the West and the reclusive regime has spiked in recent weeks, and Pyongyang has threatened to carry out a sixth nuclear test that would further inflame tensions.

The statement, carried by North Korean news agency KCNA, said the alleged plot included the use of "biochemical substances including radioactive substance and nano poisonous substance".

Calling the US and South Korean intelligence services a "hotbed of evils in the world", the report accused the agencies of having "hatched a vicious plot to hurt the supreme leadership of the DPRK".

KCNA laid out the alleged plot in great detail, saying it was hatched in 2014 when the South Korean and United States intelligence agencies recruited a North Korean working in the timber industry in eastern Russian Federation.

The charge came just after a visit to South Korea by Central Intelligence Agency director Mike Pompeo and at a time of high tension driven by concerns that North Korea may conduct a sixth nuclear test or further missile launches in defiance of UN Security Council resolutions.

It alleged that a North Korean, identified only by the surname "Kim", had been "corrupted and bribed" by South Korean intelligence services while he was working in Russian Federation.

North Korea held a large military parade in Pyongyang on April 15, but KCNA reported contacts between Kim and the South Korean agents as late as April 20.

What's With the Crazy, Scary North Korean Propaganda?

South Korea has accused Pyongyang of assassination plots, too, most recently in February following the murder of Kim Jong Nam, allegedly at the hands of North Korean agents. The Trump administration has repeatedly warned "all options are on the table" regarding North Korea.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said on Wednesday that Washington was working on more sanctions against North Korea if it takes steps that merit a new response.

"Korean-style anti-terrorist attack will be commenced from this moment to sweep away the intelligence and plot-breeding organisations of the US imperialists and the puppet clique", the statement says.

It added that the Central Intelligence Agency had chosen to use "biochemical substances" for the assassination and described the alleged plot as tantamount to "the declaration of a war".

The US House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved to tighten sanctions on North Korea on Thursday.
