Police arrest serial killings suspect after months of unease

"It's been said that a serial killer is like a chameleon, and that's what made this case so frustrating", U.S. Marshal David Gonzales said in a press conference.

"I'm innocent", Aaron Saucedo, 23, blurted out as a Maricopa County prosecutor was detailing the case against him during the hearing on Monday evening.

This photo and sketch combo shows an undated photo provided by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office of Aaron Saucedo, left, and a July 2016 composite sketch provided by the Phoenix Police Department showing a suspect in a series of fatal shootings in Phoenix.

Former state lawmaker Lydia Hernandez said Wednesday that she doesn't want to feel a sense of false security if Saucedo is not in fact the shooter.

"We're not casting doubt but as Maryvale residents we want to make sure we do our due diligence and that the person is treated with his due process, because we want to make sure we got the right person". The judge said Saucedo faces eight counts of first-degree murder and multiple counts of other crimes.

Hernandez is calling for a summary of the case to be released.

The relatives of two victims in a serial shooting case that Phoenix police say they've solved say they're relieved but hurting emotionally.

The suspect then went on a killing spree from March of a year ago until July, police said.

Castro said her son was a noble person who studied and worked hard and was loved by everyone he knew.

Authorities say a suspect has been arrested in series of shooting attacks in Phoenix previous year that left at least seven people dead and two others wounded over a four-month period.

Records show Saucedo was pulled over for allegedly running a red light on October 27, 2015, just a month after the first killing.

All of the killings were random except for the first one, Ms Williams said.

Howard says that the first real break in the case came last month, when detectives allegedly discovered an evidentiary link between Saucedo and the 2015 slaying of his mother's boyfriend, 61-year-old Raul Romero. Authorities investigated Saucedo more closely and connected him to the serial killings.

The case turned deadly four days later when Romero was murdered in front of his home and the killing resumed in January 2016 when a 22-year-old man was fatally shot in front of his home.

"For the previous year, I've been saying, 'Hey - we need tips, because that is where the break in the case is going to come from, ' and that's where it came from", Howard reemphasizes.

"I had a gut feeling it was him", she told the Republic.

Marina Smith, the partner of 21-year-old Diego Verdugo-Sanchez, who was gunned down on April 1, 2016, said she welcomed news of the arrest but was still struggling with his loss.

Police also have linked Saucedo to the April 19, 2016, death of 60-year-old Krystal White; the June 3, 2016, death of Horacio de Jesus Pena; and to the killings of two women, Angela Linner and Stefanie Ellis, and 12-year-old girl Maleah Ellis on June 12, 2016. "But they wanted me to find out from them and not the news".

They allege Saucedo's crime spree began on March 17, 2016, when a 16-year-old boy was shot and injured as he walked down a street.

The suspect struck again the next day but did not kill anyone.

The latest incident occurred on July 11, when a gunman shot a vehicle occupied by a 21-year-old man and 4-year-old boy in a residential neighborhood.
