US, China must 'lead the way' on climate: Obama

Trump and his top climate and economic aids will kick-off discussions in earnest on Tuesday in the USA, a senior administration official said, adding that "they are meeting tomorrow at 1.30 pm".

The meeting was meant to lay the groundwork for a formal proposal to Trump, who has promised to announce a decision before a Group of Seven summit at the end of May. "But it won't happen without clear, stable policy signals from countries worldwide - in particular, the United States government whose waffling on the Paris Climate Agreement is hugely troubling", she said in a statement.

Tiffany & Co.'s message to the Donald Trump arrives as the president considers whether or not to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement-the first global, legally-binding agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and avoid the dangers of climate change worldwide.

Aides says he is moving toward a decision whether to honor the 2015 deal to curb greenhouse gas emissions to limit global warming, including a US pledge to reduce its pollution over the coming decade.

Sue Biniaz, a former State Department legal adviser who supports the accord, admitted Trump does not need to make a binary choice between leaving or staying.

A meeting for top advisers to discuss the deal was set for Tuesday afternoon but was postponed.

Senior State Department environmental official David Balton said Monday that Trump has indicated he plans to decide over the next couple of weeks whether the USA will abide by the accord. Obama ratified the accord last September. "That's the short answer to the issue about the United States".

On 30 April, Trump told a rally in Pennsylvania that he would make a decision within two weeks. The official requested anonymity to discuss private conversations.

David Balton, a top USA diplomat who works on environmental issues, said there would be "no change" in US participation even if Trump ultimately decides to pull out of the Paris pact.

Chairman of the talks, Moroccan Foreign Minister Salaheddine Mezouar, said global momentum to combat climate change was irreversible and it would be "difficult or foolish" for anyone to defy public pressure for action. But, like that larger meeting, the session between Ivanka Trump and Pruitt was postponed.

"The current administration has differences with my administration in terms of energy policy, and that's part of what happens in democracy". During his brief tenure at the EPA, though, Pruitt has shown a greater willingness to working with polluting industries to remove regulatory barriers than focusing on protecting the environment.

Many nations and NGOs are urging Trump to stay in the global agreement.

Macron intends to keep France's pledge to the United Nations to cut greenhouse gas emissions 40 percent by 2030, but the president-elect also suggested implementing a $110 per ton carbon tax and getting more energy from solar and wind power.
