Familia has blood clot surgery, return this year uncertain

Familia mentioned it somewhat offhandedly to the trainers on Wednesday, but because he doesn't use that finger in any of his pitches, they cleared him to pitch that day.

We all know that Familia did not appear much in this year's season due to the domestic violence policy of Major League Baseball that he violated.

Familia was a first-time All-Star a year ago and led the majors with a team-record 51 saves, finishing with a 2.55 ERA and 84 strikeouts in 77 2/3 innings. With a blood clot being the issue, however, that may not be likely.

Familia underwent surgery Friday to address a blood clot in his armpit area, Marc Carig of Newsday reports. Yesterday was a tough day for a lot of us.

Hundreds turned out to honor Steven Holcomb who died last Saturday at age 37 in the dormitory at the Olympic Training Center. No final word yet on the cause of death

The arterial clot will be examined Friday in St. Louis by Dr. Robert Thompson, who treated starter Matt Harvey a year ago for thoracic outlet syndrome, the Mets said in a statement.

Familia has posted a shaky 4.93 SIERA with a 23.3 percent strikeout rate and 1.61 WHIP through 11 games (9 1/3 innings pitched) this season. Some positive injury news for the Mets, Asdrubal Cabrera and Lucas Duda are expected to be in the lineup Friday against the Milwaukee Brewers, returning from thumb and elbow injuries respectively. Today, we've got to get ourselves ready to play tonight.

The loss of Familia is the latest blow for a team that also had to deal this week with the three-game suspension of Matt Harvey for skipping a game last weekend following a late night on the town. They've lost nine players to the disabled list since the start of the year, including Noah Syndergaard, Yoenis Cespedes, Travis d'Arnaud and Steven Matz, among several others. The outfielder had tests on his lower back in NY this week to determine where there were any problems that might be affecting his hamstring.
