Macron's Election Win Cheered by Scientists

Le Pen may have lost, but she's proving that her party and, more importantly, her message of reduced immigration and more nationalistic and France-first policies, are popular with millions of French voters.

France's youngest president, who takes office on Sunday, faces the daunting task of reuniting a troubled, divided nation riven by anxieties about terrorism, chronic unemployment, immigration and France's relationship with the rest of Europe.

Mr Valls told RTL radio that Mr Macron's victory over far-right leader Marine Le Pen in the presidential run-off on Sunday was a blow to populism in Europe, and gave a "terrific" image of France overseas. On the other was a candidate who was leading a liberal, pro-European campaign and has been a standard-bearer for France's traditional ties with Germany.

Macron received a total of 20,753,797 votes, compared with 10,644,118 for Marine Le Pen, the ministry announced the day after the landmark election. "This Socialist Party is dead, it is behind us", said Valls, a reform-minded premier from 2014 to 2016 when Macron was economy minister. Macron is working to obtain a majority in the lower house of parliament in June elections.

He expressed Iran's "readiness to constantly exchange views [with the French officials] on bilateral, regional and worldwide issues" and hoped that obstacles in the way of enhanced cooperation would be removed during Macron's tenure. A key aide said the party would change its name as part of a revamp.

Verdict: King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is a low point in Guy Richie's illustrious career. Sometimes I didn't know why the characters were fighting, but I just went along with it.

Macron's victory is a relief for Germany, the main defender of the European Union against rising anti-establishment sentiment on the right and left of the political spectrum.

Still, Le Pen said Sunday that her party "must deeply renew itself" and proposed a "deep transformation of our movement in order to make a new political force".

But Macron remained the favorite, with polls after their final debate showing 63 percent of people found Macron the more convincing versus 34 percent for Le Pen. In the run-off against Ms Le Pen, he got nearly two-thirds of the vote, according to exit polls. The centre-left Socialists and centre-right Republicans, both of which were trounced in the elections, are divided on whether they are willing to work with Macron, and the hard left remains implacably opposed to him. There is scepticism however about Macron's ability to win a majority with En Marche candidates, meaning he might have to form a coalition.

"The first round saw the start of a major decomposition of French political life through the elimination of the old parties. This second round is organizing a major political re-composition around a patriots' versus globalists' divide".
