Syrian Kurdish forces say they will push on to IS capital

"The U.S. has found a partner east of the Euphrates and wants to strengthen that entity [the PKK/PYD]". It could stop the Kurds from expanding their power in the region further and from possibly bolstering the Kurdish nationalist movement inside Turkey - Erdogan's ultimate worry.

US-backed fighters said Friday they were preparing for a final assault on the Islamic State group s Syrian bastion Raqa, likely next month, with new weapons and armoured vehicles promised by Washington.

Following that announcement, a chorus of high-ranking Turkish officials condemned the move to arm the YPG, which they referred to as an extension of the PKK.

Last week the Pentagon announced President Donald Trump had approved supplying arms to the Kurdish contingent of the SDF, a controversial decision that has angered Turkey, which views the fighters as terrorists.

Analysts say Tuesday's meeting at the White House will have significant consequences not only for U.S.

"We will, of course, show these to the president during our visit on [May 16] and ask him what this is all about if we are partners against worldwide terrorism", Erdogan said. The move, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, is one of the things Washington is offering to ease Turkish concerns that the weapons will end up in enemy hands.

But the USA insists the arms being delivered are carefully calibrated to the needs of an anticipated offensive against the main IS base in the Syrian town of Raqa, and that they will keep tabs on all the weapons being deployed. This has alarmed Ankara which fears the United States supplied weapons could eventually turn up inside Turkey in the hands of the PKK.

"Trump's Defence Secretary Jim Mattis said after talks in London on Thursday with Yildirim that he had no doubt the two countries could work through the tensions caused by the decision to arm the YPG".

In talks on Thursday, the U.S. defence secretary, James Mattis, tried to assure Yıldırım that forces for the YPG in Syria would not be allowed to filter into Turkey. "We never have and never will", Mattis said after his meeting with Yildirim.

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said it has received light weaponry from the United States, not heavy ones as circulated by some media outlets. Otherwise, the outcome won't only affect Turkey.

He also criticised the European Union, saying it had turned into a bureaucratic state and needed to "rethink its position".

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is due to meet with President Trump on Tuesday just ahead of the US President's first foreign tour overseas when he will visit Saudi Arabia, Israel and the Vatican. This plan was not the Trump administration's plan. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to publicly discuss the matter, said artillery or surface-to-air missiles would not be provided.

Erdogan's visit will include high-level meetings of his delegation with USA officials to discuss the issue of the PKK/PYD in northern Syria and Iraq. The US has already deployed troops to fight alongside the group against ISIL in Syria and protect them from Turkish airstrikes.
