According to the police, a call was received at 7:35 am about some chemical leakage at customs area of Tughlaqabad depot, which is located near the schools.

Deputy fire Chief Rajesh Panwar said, however, the source of the gas leak remains unclear.

The students complained of irritation in their eyes and throat and the school authorities immediately vacated the premise.

Talking to the media after meeting some of the victims at Majeedia Hospital in Hamdard Nagar, Mr. Kejriwal also said that the district magistrate had been asked to investigate the matter.

"Tughlakabad area is safe now".

"I spoke to the girls and the doctors, the condition of the students is normal", Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia tweeted hours later, after visiting the hospitals. A few students were still under observation. Mr Nadda said the five member team of AIIMS doctors also visited the Tughlakabad Depot where the gas leak incident took place yesterday. "There were several workers at the depot who started falling ill due to which we requested our employers to ensure that the formalities at the customs department is completed and the container is allowed to leave for its destination".

An FIR under relevant sections of the IPC and environment protection act has been filed against unknown persons.

The leak led to more than 300 people, including the school girls, local residents and commuters, being admitted to the hospital. According to information provided by the school principal, 50 school students have admitted to the hospital so far.

The school with a strength of 3,500 students had two shifts - one from 6.45 AM to 12.30 PM, and another from 1 PM to 6 PM.

Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda instructed all Centre-run hospitals to be ready to help the victims.

Initial reports suggest that more than 100 student were taken to three hospitals in the nearby area.

"It was stressful to handle both children as well our staff", said a Sanskrit teacher from the school.
