Nate Karns whiffs 12 as Royals outlast Orioles

Baltimore Orioles' Mark Trumbo is tagged out at home by Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez as he tried to advance on a single by Trey Mancini during the third inning of a baseball game Friday

Nate Karns won a spring training competition to earn the fifth slot in the Kansas City rotation. Those rocky ouings came on the heels of a three-start stretch in which he yielded three runs in 21 1/3 innings.

Karns is the first in franchise history to strike out 12 in five innings.

"That's pretty cool, but as a starter I'd like to go deeper in games", Karns said.

Less than a week ago a writer on this very website wrote an article about how to watch the Royals even if they weren't going to win very many games this season. Young gave up home run to Chris Davis to leadoff the second and a two-run shot in a four-run fourth to Caleb Joseph to finish his day.

Baltimore ace Dylan Bundy, Thursday's scheduled starter, will be on the mound for the series opener and is 4-0 with seven runs allowed over his last five starts. Moss has homered in consecutive games. Moustakas and Alcides Escobar each drove in a run in the frame. "I didn't execute and it cost us".

Hosmer had two hits and walked twice.

In 3.1 innings, Gausman, who was relieved by Richard Bleier, was charged with five runs and a season-high nine hits.

"I don't think it's frustrating", Bleier said of moving up and down.

But his last start was against the Nationals, the best offensive team in baseball so far this year, and he went 7 innings only allowing 2 runs while striking out 8. Pena homered in the third and fifth innings, the second and third homers of his career.

Pillar hit the home run to left field off Edwin Diaz (1-2), his fifth.

For those of you who didn't read that exceptionally persuasive article and have thus not been paying attention, the Royals have now won 5 of their last 6 games.

Kelvin Herrera worked the ninth for his sixth save and Joakim Soria (2-1) picked up the victory with a 1-2-3 eighth inning.

Hosmer reached base four times on Saturday, and his average is up to.299.

"I think Asher is capable of being a major league starter, too, but it's all about serving the needs of the major league club, and sometimes that's going down there and being ready when something happens to a starter". Before each game, balls are rubbed with a New Jersey mud from a Delaware River tributary to take the shine off. Can you imagine if you had other sports that did that?

Catcher Drew Butera apparently didn't see the ball, but Soria tracked it and he raced past Butera to make the grab by the backstop between home plate and the Orioles dugout. It depends on how much the guys who are rubbing the balls up want to make them that night. "That's what we say, 'Higher than high.' You know, throwing a fastball up to a guy, leaving it a little too good and they put a good swing on it". I'm sure that a lot of guys would gladly be in my position, at least getting opportunities in the big leagues.

Eric Hosmer's hitting surge is helping the Kansas City Royals pile up some wins. None of them have more than a single hit off of him in that time.

PIRATES 6, DIAMONDBACKS 4 (10) Jose Osuna hit a two-run home run for visiting Pittsburgh with two outs in the 10th inning, and Tony Watson escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the inning. He will be the designated hitter for both games of a doubleheader and then catch Sunday. LF Alex Gordon was back in the Kansas City lineup after missing the game Saturday with groin tightness. "Really, I started to feel a lot better at the plate in the Chicago [White Sox] series [which ended May 7]".

Young yielded a home run to Chris Davis to lead off the second. He is 1-8 in his past 14 starts.
